Just in time to relieve the winter
doldrums, The Bull in Kato Gouves has reopened with an extended live music
schedule, a lounge and freshly prepared food service area and a competitive
pool and darts sports program.
The Bull, which has been a live music
landmark in the Gouves Township since first opening its doors in February,
2003, had closed this past February for personal reasons, according to Angie
Gallagher, the congenial hostess of the popular night spot.
“We decided it would be a good time to
renovate both the interior and exterior, and expand our music program, as
well as incorporate other innovations,” she said. “At the same time, we took
in a new partner who was able to contribute many fresh ideas, and was able
to implement them as part of our new format.”
The new partner is Peter Seger, the
renowned baker from Analipsi, and owner of Petit Paris in Iraklion.
“I welcome the challenge of this new
enterprise,” Peter said. “The Bull has been a top live music pub in Gouves
for years, and now we plan to make it an even greater experience for our
regular customers, while at the same time attract many new people from
Gouves to Iraklion, who are looking for that special place to enjoy a winter
evening. With Angie’s long-time experience as a pub owner and my own 18
years of experience in the food business in Crete, we are confident we now
have a team which will produce one of the top entertainment attractions, not
only in Gouves, but in the entire Iraklion area.”
Before moving to Crete from Athens in
1995, Angie, whose mother is Greek, ran the popular Bob’s Pub in Glyfada,
which had been started by her American father, who has since passed away.
After working in various places in Crete, she decided to open a pub with an
entirely new concept in Gouves. She contracted for two adjoining stores, and
converted them into one spacious room with a huge circular bar.
“We decided on a “country-western”
format, and even tried to purchase a bucking bull,” she said. “But we
encountered too many problems, so we put a pool table where the bull would
have been.”
The newly renovated pub will still have
the western theme, but many new innovations have been incorporated. |
“First of all, and most importantly,”
Peter told us, “the popular Thursday night live music program will be
expanded to other nights. As of now, we’re trying live music on Saturdays,
too, with other days being considered. Also, we are planning some Sunday
afternoon events especially for children.” The popular house band, Lazy Bones,
which plays a wide selection of modern rock, has become a favourite of
the Bull, and will continue on Thursdays. Other bands, including 43
Burned, will appear on Saturdays.

In addition to the new live music
program, the Bull has introduced a snack and lounge area on its spacious
outside front deck and patio. Special mood-enhancing lighting, comfortable
reclining lawn chairs and more than 14 tables are positioned around a new
food service display counter, featuring various snacks and sandwiches, all
prepared fresh daily at Peter’s bakery.

Another new Bull feature is the
availability of two computers with a broadband wireless connection, and
management has announced the beginning of the winter season pool and darts
competitions.
In addition, Peter and Angie are
pooling their respective experiences to come up with a holiday season
program that will keep everyone in a festive mood.
“So far we are settled on a big
Christmas Egg Nog Bash and a gala New Year’s Eve party with champagne and
hot and cold buffet,” Angie said. “And other holiday-related events are in
the discussion stage.”
Apparently, according to the new management of The Bull,
anyone who still thinks winter in Gouves is boring should crawl into the
Skotino Cave and hibernate!
