THE PHRASE: IT’S A DOG’S LIFE TAKES ON AN ALL-NEW MEANING

By Tony Bowes

  A chauffeured Rolls-Royce Phantom . . . a 28-room mansion . . . a 34-carat diamond . . . these are just some of the things we can expect multi-millionaires to acquire over the years.

What? These precious possessions are owned by a dog?

Well, it’s not as crazy as it sounds.

Recently, the eccentric billionaire, Leona Helmsley, left a will bequeathing eight million Euros to her pet dog, Trouble.

However, that’s mere chicken feed – or dog food – compared to some canine tycoons.

A German shepherd dog, Gunther IV and his sire, Gunther III, were allegedly left 85 million Euros in 1992 when their owner, Countess Karlotta, passed away. With interest, and investments, Gunther IV is now worth an estimated 258 million euros.

Then there is Jasper, a Doberman Labrador mix, who was at the point of being put to sleep at Battersea Dogs Home, London, when he caught the eye of Ramsden Brewery heiress, Diana Myburgh. The lady adopted him and then died shortly afterwards, leaving the dog an untold fortune.

Jasper now lives in a 500 hectare estate.

Nora Hardwell, from England, left her two Collie-crosses, Tina and Kate over 600,000 Euros, and Oprah Winfrey plans to leave her dogs 21 million Euros – if they’re not cut out of her will for pooping on her ermine carpet, or some such travesty.

But, pet dogs don’t have a monopoly on inheriting untold riches.

There’s a South African chimpanzee who stands to inherit 51 million Euros; British actress Beryl Reid left her six cats a one-million-Euro cottage; Tinker, an eight year old feline, was left 650,000 Euros; Big Toby, a 52-year-old tortoise, enjoys an inheritance of over 70,000 Euros; an African parrot called Csoki, was also left 70,000 Euros, and Fluffy, a ginger tom cat, inherited 43,000 Euros.

Actress Drew Barrymore’s dog, Flossie, is said to be the proud owner of a two million Euro Beverly Hills house, while the poodle, Toby Rimos, inherited 21 million Euros.

And, the list goes on . . . in almost every country, there are extremely wealthy pets.

Even here on Crete, while not on the scale of Jasper or Trouble or Tinker, there are several pets said to be included in wills, like the mixed-breed dog called Spot who stands to inherit a 16-year-old battered Ford Fiesta!
