Top 10 Christmas Films

By Christine and Tony Bowes

Christmas Day . . . the turkey or roast pork is nothing but bones, the wine bottles have been drained and the sweets and Metaxa are on the table.  Now's the time to sprawl on the sofa and watch your favourite Christmas film.  According to our survey, these are the top ten holiday movies.

1)     It’s A Wonderful Life Made in 1946, this film tells of an angel helping a compassionate but despairingly frustrated business man, played by James Stewart. The angel, played charmingly by Henry Travers, shows him what life would have been like if he never existed. Nominated for five Oscars, this film is guaranteed to make you cry.

2)     Miracle on 34th Street The original version from 1947 is an irresistible film. A department store Santa claims to be the real deal. To prove it, he lands in court, converting a skeptical six-year-old (Natalie Wood) into a believer.

3)     Love Actually This is a beautiful 2003 a film where the inter-twining lives of eight very different couples come to a head during a dramatic Christmas in London. A film which will make you laugh and cry, and one of the best Christmas films of recent years.

4)     A Christmas Story Made in 2003, this is the heart-warming story of a nine year old boy, Ralphie Parker, and his childhood Christmas in the 1940s. The most memorable scene being when his tongue sticks to a frozen pole. Perfect Christmas afternoon viewing.

5)     Die Hard Not your traditional Christmas film fare, this action packed festive drama of 1988, is about an off-duty cop, John McClane, who must overcome terrorists and save lives – all in time for Christmas.

6)     Trains, Planes and Automobiles An entertaining 1987 comedy about two very different men desperately trying to get home for Christmas, and having every obstacle put in their way. It contains many funny moments and has a heart warming ending.

7)     Home Alone Made in 1990, eight year old Kevin is mistakenly left behind when his family flies to France for Christmas. At first, he relishes the time alone, but then he is threatened by two would-be burglars whom he must outwit by rigging up lots of booby traps. Really good family entertainment.

8)     A Christmas Carol This must-see Christmas classic for all ages was made in 1951 and still holds up well. It's all about that cruel miser Scrooge, who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve, who try to melt his steely soul and teach him the true meaning of Christmas.

9)      White Christmas This1954 classic is about two men who meet during the war and team up afterwards to become the hottest song and dance duo around. It has big stars, great music and a lot of laughs, in addition to telling a beautiful love story. A perennial holiday favourite.

10)      National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation This 1989 comedy tells of the Griswold family's stay-at-home Christmas, and the numerous relatives invited to join them. Amidst all the ensuing chaos and catastrophes, the film manages to portray a sentimental streak with old wounds healing. A hilarious film, but with a good Christmas feeling.
