LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor:

On our video website, TV Crete, there are videos about different villages and local life on Crete. Looking at The Khronicles website, I wondered if it wouldn’t be interesting for you, as well as for us, to place some news items (such as interviews or other events) as streaming video on your website.  In my opinion, it would be an advantage and provide immediate exposure to an event by those who visit your website, without having to wait until the following month for the print edition. As a former freelance cameraman with the National TV Station SBS6 from the Netherlands, I worked for the news program “Hart van Nederland”. So, I hope that my suggestion would be beneficial for your newspaper and enable a possible cooperation between us.

Piet Roberti

Dear Piet:

Thank you for your interesting suggestion – filmed news reports on the Khronicles website. We're always open to suggestions for improving both the print and the web editions of The Khronicles. We've forwarded your letter to our webmaster, John McLaren, and you should be hearing from him soon. Perhaps we can develop an interesting new concept for out reraders.

Dear Editor:

I love the Khronicles. I lived in Iraklion for six years and my heart has never left Crete. Some of my dearest friends live on the island.  Hopefully next year I will get back for a visit. Now just a small item: please consider using the term "Illegal alien" rather than "illegal immigrant". If you look up the words alien and immigrant in the dictionary you may go "oops." My best for a long and continued success.

Dear Tony:

We took your suggestion and looked up the two words. Oops!

Alien: a resident born in or belonging to another country who has not acquired citizenship by naturalization (distinguished from citizen); a foreigner.

Immigrant: a person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence.

While we see your point, the two words have become synonymous over the years, and both are listed as alternate words for each other in the Thesaurus. However, we'll try to be more careful in the future, and thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Dear Editor:

Having made Chris Bowes' recipe for Sweet & Sour Chicken Curry, at last after many years of trying it is the most delicious curry that I have made; also it is so quick and easy. I have sent the recipe to my daughters in England and it's a firm favourite with all the family. Thanks, Chris, for your wonderful column.

Dear Chris:

Sounds yummy. We'll pass your praise along to our food columnist, Chris Bowes. It is sure to make her very happy – perhaps even happy enough to whip up a batch of that great curry for our staff.
