“A basic axis for the political
commitments of the Hersonissos local government materializes today,"
Hersonissos Mayor Spiros Danellis emphasized to the hoteliers in the
township during a recent information meeting regarding the application of
the recycling system
In the meeting, the mayor asked for the
contribution of the tourism enterprises to the development of the recycling
system in the Hersonisos demos, as the hotels constitute the basic producers
of recyclables for the township.
According to the mayor, the recycling
system in hotels is applied for the first time in the entire country, with
the Hersonisos Township acting as the pilot program in its application.
While hotels and local residents have
been informed regarding the procedure for recycling, schools have also been
provided with the pertinent information with the hopes that recycling
becomes a way of life from a young age.

The time spent to separate the
recyclables at home is miniscule compared to the time spent separating the
same recyclables at the plant.
In the Hersonissos Township, about
13,000 tons of civic refuse is produced yearly, which increase by about
eight to nine percent every year. That quantity multiplies by 10-fold during
the summer months.
“With this program, we hope to
effectively reduce the volume of refuse deposited in the garbage dump,"
emphasized the mayor. "In any case, the critical agent in the recycling
chain is man.”
Mayor Danellis expressed his intention
to get this important message across to all residents in the township, with
particular attention to educating the children.
