Local Golf:

David Walker Memorial: Gale Force 10 winds and rain, and yet 22 golfers turned up at the Crete Golf Club in Hersonissos to play in a tournament in memory of David Walker, a resident of Istron, who passed away June 2. David’s parents flew in from England for the memorial, which started at the seventh hole (David’s favourite) where a wooden bench was erected in his memory. Neils Bogstad of Bathi, the organizer of the tournament, said that it was not a day of sorrow but a day to enjoy. An awards dinner followed the tournament, which was attended by 80 people. Harry Zervos, general manager of the Crete Golf Club, presented the trophies to the winner of the tournament, George Gennarakis of Heraklion, with second place going to Sandra Fowle of Kalo Horio. The tournament and dinner raised 1.700 euros, which went for cancer research.

Local Football:
Aris (Gournes) 1 v Arkadia 1:

The first half belonged to Aris who was doing all the attacking with a very strong wind behind them and went close to goal with a few shots. During the second half, gale force winds made playing very difficult, and Arkadia did most of the attacking with Aris making rare breaks at goal. In the 55th minute a goalmouth scramble enabled Arkadia’s No. 4, Manoli Alexaki, to score with a low drive. This spurred Aris on and they started to keep the ball on the ground and in the 65th minute No 6, Yiannis Cornilakis, equalized. The referee blew for time with what appeared to be ten minutes left to play, and despite protests from the players, the officials insisted his watch was correct.

Diagoras (Anopoli) 1 v Pigasos 0:

Diagoras, facing a very strong wind, played some good football and had a couple of close shots at goal. Pigasos were awarded a very dubious penalty but a great save by Diagoras goalkeeper, Pavlos Agrimanis, kept them in the game. In the second half, with the wind behind them, Diagoras eventually broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with a superb goal from 35 yards from George Delistathis. With the Diagoras captain, Manolis Markakis, organizing the defense well, Diagoras kept up the attacking play. However, Pigasos never gave up and had another good shot at goal which was brilliantly saved by George Delistathis which, in our view, made him ‘Man of the Match’.

Martial Arts: The Ikaros Athletic Association of Kato Gouves made an excellent showing at the 2007 Shito-Ryu, Shuko and Karate Do World Cup Competition which was held at the TEI closed Gymnasium in Iraklion.

Ice Hockey:  After nine years out of the ice hockey World Championships, the Greek National Ice Hockey team is back. They will take part in a qualifying tournament in Sarajevo in February 2008 with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Armenia, ahead of the World Championship Division III Tournament in Luxembourg. Despite not having a skating rink (the last one closed in 2003) Greece persuaded the International Ice Hockey Federation that the Greek team is still alive and active. The team will head to an ice rink in the Czech Republic to train.
