COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS TREE

LIGHTS UP ON DECEMBER 9

By Lou Duro and Sophia Klidi

The second annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting Festival and Children's Christmas Card Competition will be held Sunday, December 9 in the Cosmos Super Market parking lot, across from the store.

The free festival will include the official lighting of the gaily-decorated tree by Mayor Yiorgos Nikolakakis; music and Christmas carolling by the Iraklion School of Music; additional holiday music by twin-sister music virtuosos Stephanie and Marianna Kapsetaki; a visit by Santa Claus and the judging and awarding of prizes for the children's competition.

Santa, with his bag of toys, will be back in
town for this year's party

Organized by The Khronicles and co-sponsored by many of the shops and businesses within the Township, this year's festival is expected to draw a record number of local families. Last year's celebration was attended by more then 200 children and parents.

This year's festivities will begin at 5 P.M. with the music and carolling.  Complimentary sweets and refreshments will be available.

As the highlight of the evening, children are invited to participate in a competition to create their own Christmas card, with the theme: "What Christmas means to me."

Winners will be chosen from two age groups: 9 and under, and 10 to 12.

Stephanie and Marianna Kapsetaki will perform at festival

Up until December 4, participants can bring their cards to the Khronicles office, Paperworld Bookshop, and Playland-Γιούπι, Kokkini Hani; Manos Super Market, Ano Gouves; Oscar DVD, Kato Gouves and Our Corner Bookshop, Gournes. Or, they can bring their entries to the officials at the sight on the day of the event.

The entries will be judged by Katerina Sarma, a painter and instructor at the Iraklion School of Arts, and Christine Boladz, a noted artist with a studio in Iraklion.  All entries will be judged on creativity and originality, and prizes for first, second and third places in both age groups, as well as several honorable mentions, will be awarded.

Following the competition, Mayor Nikolakakis will officially light the tree, which will remain lit until after the New Year for all to enjoy. Following the lighting ceremony, Santa Claus will make his appearance with a bag full of gifts for all kids.

Organized for the second consecutive year by The Khronicles, the community Christmas celebration is made possible with the participating sponsorship of some of the township's leading businesses and shops. Many sponsors and contributors have already signed on, and many more are expected.

As of this writing, the sponsors and contributors, in addition to those mentioned above, include: Cosmos Super Market, B-Younique, Spryidon Sweet Shop, Neraida Restaurant, Water City, FotoSami, Dionisos Super Market, Top Cleaning, Bill's Hardware, Foto Prestige, Kouroupakis Meat Market, Karta, Euro Shop, Mihalis Yianakouthakis Bakery, Graphic Plus, Super Soundic, Ambrosia Taverna, Elite Super Market, Marilisa Apartments, Kokkini Hani Bakery, Wood Center, and Internet DVD World.
