Top eight films of 2007:

It’s that time of year when we look back at what were the top movies of the previous year and see if we agree with the experts, or even if we’ve actually seen any of them. Here is the list we’ve come up with:

1) Ratatouille:

This animated comedy from Walt Disney was directed by Bob Peterson  starred Ian Holm, Lou Romano and Brian Dennehy.  It’s about a rat named Remy who dreams of becoming a great French chef despite his family's wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession.

No Country for Old Men

2) No Country for Old Men:

Directed by Joel Coen, this adventure-war drama features Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Woody Harrelson. The story begins when Llewelyn Moss (BROLIN) finds a pickup truck surrounded by a sentry of dead men. A load of heroin and two million dollars in cash are still in the back. When Moss takes the money, he sets off a chain reaction of catastrophic violence that not even the law - in the person of ageing, disillusioned Sheriff Bell (JONES) - can contain. As Moss tries to evade his pursuers - in particular a mysterious mastermind who flips coins for human lives (BARDEM) - the film simultaneously strips down the American crime drama and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning’s headlines.

3) The Lives of Others:

A political –thriller, with some religion thrown in.  It was directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and stars Martina Gedeck, Ulrich Muehe and Sebastian Koch. An East-German loyalist is assigned to collect evidence against a popular writer and actress, but as he becomes immersed into their culture he begins to question his own loyalties.

Once

4) Once:

A musical-romance directed by John Carney starring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. This tale tells of one man’s dream to land a record deal. His journey leads him to find a woman who shares his love for music which sparks a romance between them.

5) Away from Her:

A romance-drama directed by Sarah Polley starring Julie Christie, Olympia Dukakis and Gordon Pinsent. It’s about Fiona and Grant , an Ontario couple who have been married for over 40 years. Now, in the oncoming twilight of their years, they are forced to face the fact that Fiona's "forgetfulness" is actually Alzheimer's disease.

Away From Her
The Bourne Ultimatum

6) The Bourne Ultimatum:

An action-adventure directed by Paul Greengrass starring Matt Damon, Julia Stiles and Joan Allen. All he wanted was to disappear. Instead, Jason Bourne is now hunted by the people who made him what he is. Having lost his memory and the one person he loved, he is undeterred by the barrage of bullets and a new generation of highly-trained killers.

7) Zodiac:

A crime-drama directed by David Fincher which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., and Anthony Edwards. A serial killer walks the streets of San Francisco in the mid 1970s. Perplexed by his seemingly random attacks and cryptic messages four detectives become obsessed with catching the killer.

Zodiac

Michael Clayton

8) Michael Clayton:

a dramatic-thriller directed by Tony Gilroy, this film stars George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton.  Michael Clayton is an in-house "fixer" at one of the largest corporate law firms in New York.
