Dear
Editor:
Just read your
story about the old American Base. I was stationed there from 1963 to 1970,
and married a Greek from Iraklion.
My family members have been back many times. I was there in 2006 and spent
time on the old base and noticed the changes and the work going on trying to
fix it up. I do feel the base should stay with the people of Gouves, and the
people around that area. I would hate to see every thing closed off to
everyone around there. I fell in love with Crete
and the people there as well. It was so sad to see how bad the base looked
in 2006 (compared to when I was stationed there) but it was nice to see the
work being done. Thank you, Khronicles…keep fighting to keep the base
property for the people there.

Dear Editor:
As a resident of
Gouves, I’m happy to see that local people and officials are speaking out
against the base property being sold for commercial development. My only
question is, what took them so long to react? Everyone knew from the day the
Americans left that developers would be after that prime property. It should
have been stopped then. I just
hope it’s not too late!
A Concerned Citizen
Dear Gary and Concerned:
The Khronicles is the first newspaper
to express outrage over the base’s terrible deterioration, and has been a
long-time advocate for its rehabilitation. We will continue to watch the
situation closely, and report on any and all activity.

Dear Editor:
Your story in
the December issue about the Help at Home was very interesting and I applaud
the wonderful work those ladies are doing. You mentioned in your story that
they could always use donations of food and clothing, but you failed to give
a contact phone number. Could
you please tell me where to call, as I have quite a bit of almost-new
clothing which I would like to donate.
Ellie Cassese
Dear Ellie:
Sorry about that, and thanks for
bringing it to our attention. We should have included the number in the
story, as we have had several calls from other people interested in donating
to this worthy program. The phone number to call for all donations is
28970-41789.
