Following a
recent devastating explosion at the Greek Army weapons site that rocked the
entire Gouves
Township, local residents and officials are once
more appealing to proper authorities for the closure of the site.
A spokesman for
the Gournes Development and Environmental Association told
The Khronicles that the explosions have been plaguing the township
for the past eight months.
Last August, the
association, together with Gouves Vice Mayor Yiorgo Merambeliotaki, sent
letters to
|
the Iraklion
Prefecture, the District of Crete and the Administration of Army Command,
pointing out the “danger of possible toxicity in the atmosphere” with the
practice “acting as a restraining factor in the development of our Demos as
the range functions so near to an ever-increasingly populated area.”
According to the
association, the latest explosion, caused by blowing up old ammunition, was
felt throughout the residential area and left a crater of almost nine meters
in diameter and about three meters deep.
