At ceremonies in Hersonissos Town Hall,
six local residents were awarded diplomas and certification cards for
successfully completing the special 20-hour training course sponsored by the
township, in conjunction with the Samaritans and Rescuers of the Greek Red
Cross.
The first aid
course provided the volunteers with necessary life-saving knowledge and with
the skills to prepare them in matters regarding the immediate intervention
in
emergency situations.
The
graduates, who are now prepared to respond to many types of emergency
situations, are Varthaki Nectaria, Skarakis Nikos, Argiraki Maria, Trigiraki
Anna, Foukaraki Maria and Kropali Dora.
Yiorgos Tzikas, Chief of the Samaritans and Rescuers of the Greek Red Cross,
Iraklion District, who issued the diplomas to the graduating volunteers,
spoke of the long tradition of the Greek Red Cross.

“This
vital organization draws its effectiveness from its volunteers, who adopt
its values and humane principles, and offer their time with heartfelt
dedication,” he said. “These Red Cross teams can respond to all types of
life-threatening situations on mountains, in caves or on the sea, plus
searches for missing persons, as well as many other emergencies, because
knowledge saves lives.”
Mayor
Spyros Danelis, who was on hand to personally congratulate the volunteers on
behalf of the community, pointed out that “many more important activities
such as this can and will be accomplished on the Demos level.”
The Greek Red Cross has a long tradition of voluntary action and the
immediate response of its citizens dating back to its founding in 1877, and
is now the largest non-governmental organization in the country.
