Cloverfield

The old fashioned monster movie is back . . . with a 21st century twist.
Cloverfield spins the monster madness of Godzilla viewed through the Blair Witch style video recorder. All the action is via video footage making it a juddering, jittering and, occasionally, blurred experience . . . and the actual monster action is quite limited.
The first twenty minutes of the film shows the farewell party of Rob (Michael Stahl-David) before leaving for a job in Japan. Suddenly, the party is interrupted by a huge explosion as New York City comes under attack. The action starts to kick off and you begin a roller coaster ride of action, mayhem and tension.
Academy award stuff this isn’t, but it is a fun movie with an implausible storyline about a monster from outer space attacking the Big Apple. Yes, it does have elements of 9/11, which make it a little uneasy to watch, but the film is creative and entertaining. A seriously cool monster movie.
