NEWS FROM MALIA

HEAVY RISE IN STUDENTS
CREATES SCHOOL PROBLEM

The dramatic rise of student numbers in Malia during the last five years has created new housing needs.

Despite the fact that in 2003, new classrooms were given by the Iraklion Prefecture to the Malia Grammar School, the daily problems are escalating due to the fact that now 345 children are schooled in these classrooms.

The Mohos Grammar School which was finished in 1970 is today surpassed with too many students and not enough room as its student numbers went up 29 percent in the last five years.

In fact, the Mohos kindergarten has no facility to house the 37 kinder.

The facilities of the Junior High and High Schools are not adequate to house the entire student body.

MAYORS OF TOURIST DESTINATIONS
MEET WITH THE BRITISH EMBASSY

Malia Mayor Kostas Lagouthakis was among the mayors from other youth tourist destinations, such as Rhodes, Kos, Zakynthos, Kerkyra and Cyprus, who met with the British Embassy to discuss issues and problems with the tour operators from the United Kingdom, the Greek and British police and top echelons from the Ministry of the Exterior and Euroministers.

The main purpose of the meeting was to agree on common steps for the upcoming summer season in regards to dealing with situations that create havoc, such as those that have plagued Malia over recent years.

REFORM WORKS

In the old town of Malia, some reform works are taking place. They involve Electric Company networks being taken underground, sanitizing the Telephone Company’s networks by tubing it, and installing a new lighting network with traditional type fixtures.

Also, work proceeds in replacing the road top with new, high-quality and decorative materials.

These works are co-financed by the Malia Demos revenues and the Thiseas government financing program.

In Stalida, by applying the city plan, the beach front will receive a pedestrian road, as well as areas for tables and chairs and green areas and street lighting. Also stone walls are under construction together with tree planting along the national road.

In Mohos, reform work is being wrapped up on the main road and the Heroes Monument. Also, OTE networks are being tubed and a speed-up completion date is set for the end of this month. These works are being co-financed by the Malia demos and the Ο.Π.Α.Α.Χ program.

WORK CONTINUES
AT MALIA JUNCTION

Malia mayor Mr. Kostas Lagoudakis meets with the Ministry of Environment, Planning and Public works in order to speed up the procedures for the completion of the study for the junction of Malia and its connection to the old national road and Malia city.

It is considered to be of vital importance to the area because it will lighten traffic and noise pollution from and towards Iraklio and Lasithi.

It will, at the same time, give the possibility to our demos to materialize the study of viable mobility in its entirety, a fact which upgrade the area and will pave the road for many interventions in the town of Malia towards attaining its goal for a better environment in its quest for a classier tourism.
