READY, GET SET, GO…
RECYCLING STARTS!

By Niki Giamalaki

The long-awaited recycling program for the Gouves Township will begin in mid-April, according to an announcement from Mayor Yiorgo Nikolakaki.

The efforts to enroll in the ΕΣΔΑΚ program (Association for Refuse Management in Crete) started from the first days the new local government took office in 2007.

Of course, it passed through the well known Greek bureaucracy channels and now, a year later, we talk with certainty about the realization of this goal.

In a few days we will see in our township the familiar blue recycling receptacles.

According to Vice Mayor Evaggelo Hatzaki, the refuse will be picked up with special trucks and will be collected at a special sub-station created by the association in an area within N. Alikarnasso.

Informing the people is the administration’s first priority as the program’s success depends greatly on getting the word out and educating the residents.

We all know that we amass a vast quantity of garbage daily, in our homes as well as our work, and that the protection of the environment must be the country’s, as well as our township’s, first priority.

Therefore, all of us need to fully understand the benefits which result from recycling.

Firstly, we can sum it up as long-term protection of our environment, of course, and the return of useful matter to their natural and economic cycle. Of course, saving money results from the keeping and burying of recycled waste, as opposed to the old, more costly process.

Here, we must understand some very important points which will help us realize the great need of everyone’s participation.

“Our township amasses about 20 thousand tons of garbage annually, more so than the Malia Demos and only somewhat less than the Hersonissos Demos,” Mr. Hatzakis said.

“The goal of our local government is to reduce by 30 percent the refuse being carted to the garbage dump and this goal will only succeed if all our citizens embrace this effort and straight from the first day start filling up the special recycle bags with recycling material such as papers, glass, plastic and aluminium.”

The vice mayor emphasised that the above mentioned recyclable waste should be placed in the same container, for separation at the recycling center.
