IT’S CHECK MATE
FOR YOUNG GIRL
A little girl from the
Hersonissos Chess Academy
received national distinctions by winning third place in the girls’
kindergarten category in the 2008 National School Championship held in
Porto Carras Grand Resort in northern
Greece.
Irini Hondrou was
introduced to chess only a few months ago and already has proved ability
in the game.
And, she is not
the only talent in her newly formed team. There is a bouquet of little
children her age, and some a bit older, who are very passionate about
chess and practice regularly under the guidance of the coaches of the
Iraklion Chess Association.
This competition
was only Irini’s second experience with chess championships, and in
February she won a medal in her first appearance.
The
Hersonissos
Chess Academy’s
entire team is comprised of children.
“We wish Irini a
good progress and a great future because she made her parents, the Hersonissos Chess Academy,
and the Iraklion Chess Association very proud,” said an academy member.

ADULT
EDUCATION
FOR HEALTH & DIET
The office of social
policy in the Hersonissos
Township will present two
adult education programs in health training and diet-nutrition beginning
this month. Each free program, sponsored by the Prefecture’s Committee for
Adult Education, will run for a total duration of 25 hours.
GARBAGE IS MONEY
An informative tour of
the Hersonissos – Malia garbage dump site was given by Mayor Spiros Danellis
for the mayor of Tympaki, Antoni Haralambaki, and some Tympaki
and Pitsithia residents.
The tour was conducted in order to
provide a better understanding of the many problems involved with the
management of the refuse problem.
“When the lawful rules
and scientific presuppositions are followed, the management of refuse
doesn’t need to create problems,” Mayor Danellis said. “In fact, it can
actually solve problems and can be a source of revenue,” he said,
pointing out that,
besides Hersonissos and Malia, the site also receives the refuse from the
Gouves and Kastelli townships.
