 A Thousand Splendid Suns

By Khaled Hosseini

Riverhead Hardcover
384 pages
ISBN – 1594489505

After the success of his last novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini has returned with a haunting, heartbreaking story which is once again set in Afghanistan. The story starts decades before the Taliban came into power in 1996 and ends after an era of Taliban rule. It is the story of two women, born a generation apart, but who are brought together by war, loss and fate. The main characters, Mariam and Laila, are bound to affect you with their love for each other, their children and their heart-rending sacrifices. It also tells the story of Afghanistan, from the Soviet invasion on to the victory of the Mujaheddin, and then the rise of the Taliban. Hosseini’s rich and descriptive writing make this book a very compelling read and definitely not one to be missed.
