OVERHEARD AT THE TOWN COUNCIL

  • A total 32,130 euros is slated to hire life guards for the new season, but not a word about making them full-time positions.
  • The construction on the on and off ramps in Kokkini Hani has temporarily stopped as there are some legal ramifications pending due to environmental repercussions. As the council considers this an urgent matter, and that the district is dragging its feet, the township will try to find ways to push the issue through the police hierarchy and parliament members.
  • The under construction crossroads in Karteros still does not provide connections to Elia, Ano and Kato Vathia etc. The township intends to intervene.
  • Sidewalk construction (3500m) on public streets is being planned for places like the Hatzis crossroads towards Anopolis Bridge; Gournes Bridge to the base and from the Gouves crossroads towards upper village.
  • While beachfront taverna owners are allowed to lease the beach fronting their property to rent out beach umbrellas and lounge chairs, they cannot legally put tables and chairs on the beach side of the road, across from their tavernas. However, they all do, and they are fined by the Iraklion land registry, the police, the Port Authority and the Iraklion City Planning office.
