Dear Editor:

I have followed closely the articles about animal welfare and the need for a shelter for stray animals in the Gouves Demos. Now that the tourist season is getting busier surely something could be done to keep the stray dogs off the beaches as the sight of a stray dog defecating on the beach next to a lady on a sun bed, as I recently witnessed, is not a memory a tourist wants to take home with them. Keep up the good work with bringing to the fore some sensitive issues.

I lived in Crete from August - December last year and love Crete very much. I do confess although I am at present learning to speak Greek I find it very difficult.
I applied for several jobs but was unsuccessful . . . do you think there is work for hardworking Brits in Crete? I know the language will come eventually but can you think of something I could try my hand at until it does?
A wannabe Greek if ever there was one.

Dear Suzy:

It is difficult to find permanent year-round employment without learning the language, but there are many seasonal jobs, with tavernas, shops and hotels, available to English-speakers. Keep trying until you find something suitable, and keep up those Greek lessons.

Με ενδιαφέρον διάβασα το τεύχος Μαΐου  της τοπικής εφημερίδα σας, συγχαρητήρια για την πρωτοβουλία σας.

Ως μόνιμος κάτοικος Κ. Γουβών τα τελευταία 10 χρόνια, ανακάλυψα, με μεγάλη μου ικανοποίηση, ότι μέσα από την εφημερίδα σας εκφράζονται ανησυχίες και προβληματισμοί κατοίκων της περιοχής μας για μια καλύτερη ποιότητας ζωής. Είμαι και εγώ "ξένος", επέλεξα όμως τον τόπο αυτό για μόνιμη κατοικία της οικογένειας μου και θα ήθελα κάθε καινούργια μέρα να βλέπω να γίνεται ένα νέο βήμα προόδου.

Εργάζομαι στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης (στο Ηράκλειο) ως μηχανικός Τεχνολογίων Πληροφορικής και Επικοινωνιών (Information & Communication Technology). Η αγγελία που είδα στο τεύχο σας, ότι ζητάτε δημοσιογράφο / αρθρογράφο, μου έδωσε την αφορμή να σας προτείνω να εντάξετε στη θεματολογία της εφημερίδας σας κάτι σχετικά με τις Τεχνολογίες Πληροφορικής και Επικοινωνιών.

Παρακαλώ επικοινωνήστε μαζί μου αν βρίσκετε την ιδέα αυτή ενδιαφέρουσα ή ακόμα και αν δεν σας ενδιαφέρει.

Σας ευχαριστούμε για τα ευγενικά λόγια σας σχετικά με την εφημερίδα μας. Είναι πάντα ωραίο όταν ένας από τους αναγνώστες μας παίρνει το χρόνο από το πολυάσχολο πρόγραμμά του και επικοινωνεί σε ένα προσωπικό επίπεδο.

Όπως αναφέρατε, προσπαθούμε να παρέχουμε στους αναγνώστες μας τις πιο πρόσφατες ειδήσεις και πληροφορίες σχετικά με την καθημερινότητά  τους, ενώ, συγχρόνως, προσφέρουμε και διασκεδαστικά άρθρα που ενδιαφέρουν.

Με αυτό το σκεπτικό, ενδιαφερόμαστε να ερευνούμε πρόσθετες πηγές πληροφοριών και ειδήσεων και να ομιλούμε με νέους συγγραφείς και  αρθρογράφους.

Προτείνουμε να μας στείλτε ένα δείγμα του γραψίματός σας σε ένα από τα θέματα που θα επιθυμούσατε να καλύψετε, και μετά να προγραμματίσουμε μια συνάντηση για να συζητήσουμε περαιτέρω τη συμμετοχή σας με Τα Χρονικά.

Many ears ago I was stationed as a Fire Fighter at Iraklion Air Station. I have always had the fondest memories of my time there. Naively, I always pictured it in my mind as unchanged. Recently, I have seen current pictures of the fire station there and my immediate thought was "what has become of the Greek firefighters?" I left in about 1989, but I know many of those men and women must still be there. Could you suggest any way to try to contact any of my old friends? Labbros Petropolos lived in Heraklion but had an apartment building in Gouves along the road near Creta Sun Hotel; Joy Spiridaki was an emergency dispatcher; Minos Agnostakis, a dispatcher; Nikos Poniridis, a crazy young fire engine driver; Yanis Stavrolakis, always dancing, and young Sifakis, carving KriKri statues and playing on a home made bouzuki. If anyone could get me get in touch with Lambros Petropolis who was our greatest translator and all around good guy, I would be indebted.
