MALIA NEWS

NEW EFFORT TO HALT UNRULY TOURISTS

The municipality, the police, nine tourist agents that represent English visitors and the local union of Malia hoteliers met in town hall to discuss the better policing of the area, the “hunting” of customers, noise pollution, the entry of minors in night spots and the rental of quads.

The tourist agents were asked to cease to advertise Malia as a place where anything goes. The “pub crawls” to the night spots was a point of disagreement between the municipality, police and the tourist agents.

Emphasis was given to the decision of the municipal council which expressly declared that it “does not wish and will not allow this activity in the township, as it creates a lot of side effects that are channeled into the entire region.”

From their side, the tourist agents expressed their concern about the traffic and objected to the above decision by the municipal council.

The police chief Mr. Fotis Georgopoulos declared that the law will prevail in all directions, as the police department has been strengthened with 18 cadet police officers, and, during the entire summer, nightly foot patrols and nightly pub checks will be conducted.

TOWN HONORS LYRA PLAYER

An honorary event was organized by the Malia municipality in collaboration with the Mohos cultural association, for the ten-year absence of the big teacher of Cretan music Thanasi Skordalo.

The event began with speeches from Andrea Glinia, Professor of Composition in the Ministry of Culture, and Kosti Atsalaki, poet. An honorary plaque was granted to the family of Thanasi Skordalo and afterwards followed a serenade (kantada) in the back streets of Mohos village from the Melampiani Company.

The event was transmitted live from the Second Program of the Greek Broadcasting Corporation.

The groups that presented the musical creations of Thanasis Skordalos were:  Manolis Manouras, Kostis Fotakis, Haralambos Garganourakis,  Yannis Tsourthalakis, Pavlos Myrithakis,  Dimitris Swouros, Yannis Markoyiannakis, Antonis Apostolakis, Dimitris Foukakis, Antonis Fragiathakis . Dancers from the township of Agiou Vasiliou Rethymnis brought to Mohos the artistic loving air that nurtured the big teacher of Cretan music.

The event was very successful and a Cretan evening followed mixed with mirth and emotion.
