Volunteer members of the Gouves Animal Welfare committee have reported increased interest in gathering signatures for the opening of an animal shelter in the township.

According to reports, some dogs, with collars, have gone missing in Ano Gouves and Kokkini Hani. The dogs have not been found dead, so poison is being ruled out, leading owners to wonder: who would steal dogs when there are so many stray dogs around?

In a related activity, a successful bazaar in Hersonissos raised money to sterilize stray dogs and cats. However, after sterilization, they are put back on the street if a home cannot be found for them.

Those wishing to sign the animal welfare petition can do so at The Khronicles office, Teresa’s Laundry, Το Κύμα Ταβέρνα and DVD Internet in Kokkini Hani, The Tap in Kato Gouves, and Manos Mini Market in Ano Gouves. In addition, committee members will be circulating throughout the township seeking signatures.
