IMPROVEMENT OF SERVICES IN N. ALIKARNASSOS DEMOS

The autonomous department for Planning, Growth and Social Policy was created as part of a long-range plan for the improvement of services in the Nea   Alikarnasso Municipality, by Mayor Mr. Vangeli Sisamaki.

The mayor, in announcing that the region’s growth is a major concern, called for the total rearrangement of the municipality’s services.

The actions, according to Sociologist Mrs. Renia Drosou, who heads the department, are separated in the following four sectors: technical and environmental services; information technology, social services and cultural activities.

Some of the programs instituted include:

1)     Collaboration with the municipalities of N. Kazantzaki and Episkopi to pave, and map out the path and clean the Karteros Gorge.

2)     The approval of a proposal with the Iraklion Municipality on a “Society of Information” program, which concerns the creation of broadband networks, assuring a cheaper, better quality and faster communication internet system for the residents, while, at the same time, providing enterprising use of the township’s network services.

3)      Submission of proposal and approval of the “Help at Home” services, as part of the overall “Growth of Social Services for the Promotion of Equal Opportunities” program.

 4)     Organization of activities for the submission and the start of a Public Music Academy.

Mrs. Drosou said the steps that the members of this department follow are:

A) To record the needs for the region, to organize and plan the development of studies and to locate financing programs.

B) To institute or monitor European and National Programs and institutions which participate in the financing, so that the township does not have to pay out of its own funds for these programs.

C) To develop Social Policy and Public Relations.

D) To maintain good relations with outside agencies and institutions.

E)  To work together with all departments and municipality institutions according to the needs for each program and its realization.
