OVERHEARD AT THE TOWN COUNCIL

·        Supermarkets around the Demos which stay open until 01.00 and 02.00 will be reminded that the township’s ordinance clearly states closing time to be 23.00.

·        Businessmen who have rented beachfront areas from the township for sun chairs and umbrellas, and have built totally illegal bars right on the sand or the waves – so to speak -- will be reported to the proper prefecture disciplinary authorities, but first they will be dealt with by the township police and other disciplinary authorities.

·        Part of the township’s banking will be handled by the PanCretan bank. Perhaps the demos can use the rest of their banking, or at least some of it, to attract other banks to our township.

·        Some air cooling devices were promised for the Agro Co-op auditorium in Pano Gouves where the township’s council meets several times a month. That should increase the attendance of the local residents. Even if you don’t like the show, at least come to get cool for a couple of hours.

·        Four out of the six objections by the residents of Kokkini Hani regarding the opening of the ramps have been withdrawn to-date.

·        Since our main local streets are so congested, applications for several (at least five) new tourist trains were shelved until a traffic study is completed, or contracts on the existing trains expire.

·        There was quite uproar from local residents about the township’s decision to rent out for commercial use (kafenion table and chairs) a 150 sq. m. lot next to the Aghios Konstantinos church in Kato Gouves. According to Mrs. Magda Drakaki, a long time resident in the area: “we shouldn’t commercialize every single centimeter in our township. We should try and conserve peaceful and green areas such as this so that we can sit by the sea in the shade of an evergreen and enjoy our sunsets – free of charge.”

Mr. Kalogerakis, owner of the Ourania Apartments and a businessman in the area since 1973, asked the councilors: “where is their ecological conscience” and reported that “our foreign visitors complain because our township has no charisma – with practically no green in evidence.”

Mayor Nikolakakis noted: “the area will be let for only one year and none of the sea pines will be harmed.” The majority of councilors voted in the affirmative so the piece is up for grabs though it has been claimed already by at least one local businessman.

However, Mr. Zouros said he voted “no” because: “this is a special lot with some historical value and it shouldn’t be treated like any other beach front piece from Kartero to Aposelemi.”
