NEA ALIKARNASSOS NEWS

A PATH THROUGH KARTEROS GORGE

The work for the completion of the Karteros Gorge path, with a budget of 849,212 euros, is now underway.

The gorge constitutes a natural shaping with a particular aesthetic value and the project includes basic work of infrastructure, making it possible to visit the region with safety and with as few interventions as possible in the natural environment.

The project also aims to showcase the region’s natural ecosystem by rescuing and protecting rare species of flora and fauna.

The work in the 21.5km gorge is expected to be completed within this year. Included in the project are placement of informative signs; building of rest areas equipped with benches and stone barbecues, and the creation of parking lots.

BEACH FRONT GETS NEW LOOK

The township’s coastal front, from Karnagio to Stadiou street, is to undergo restructuring and gain a new look and will create “a serious upgrade” to the eastern section of the municipality.

“As the local government, we continue the area’s developmental course with the realization of projects in our township based on a Technical Program and Strategic Planning with simultaneously taking measures to protect the environment,” Mayor Vangelis Sisamakis said. “These projects, in conjunction with the future use of the area which now houses the prison, will be developed to aid and enhance culture and sports, offering a better quality of life to all our citizens.”

This work will include: road construction, fully equipped community areas, and the creation of a coastal road connecting the Iraklion harbor with the airport.

“Nea Alikarnassos has a very appreciable human potential and offers a rich cultural reserve (with the traditions and customs of our residents) that we owe to develop, as I’m certain we can,” the mayor said.

PLANS TO CREATE REGISTRY OF ARTISTS

The Planning Department for Growth and Social policy of the Nea Alikarnassos Township has moved to create a Registry for Artists in the region as another measure of support of the municipal spirit, popular art and cultural heritage of the township.

“The culture is an expression of life of man, and a complex total that includes the knowledge, the faith, the art, the law, the morals and the customs and other dexterities of man who simultaneously is a member of society,” said Renia Drosou, director of the department. “The creation of an Artist Registry constitutes a measure of factual support of all artists in Nea Alikarnasso and contributes to promote their work under the aegis of the Municipality in exhibits of not only local but also of national scope.”

“The artists have the possibility to present their work in a specific area on the ground floor of the Town Hall so that they can become known to the public.” commented Mayor Vangelis Sisamakis.

ECOLOGICAL PARK IN NEA ALIKARNASSO

Proposal for the creation of an Ecological Park, budgeted at 4.2 million euros, has been submitted to the Financing Institute of European Economic Area by the Alikarnassos the township.

The park will be designed to be completely self supported, with energy production, zero emissions and pollutants, and will be built on 27,700 square metres of land already owned by the township, located north-west of the airport.

The objective of the project is the creation of mechanisms and means which will lead to the awareness and education of citizens on issues of environment, ecology and viability.

According to the township, it will also provide services and activities which will contribute to the aid of ecological conscience of citizens (and particularly the children) and also help in the land-planning and economic growth of the region.
