As
workmen lay stones for a new wall, Father Leonidas E. Hatzakis provided
details of the ongoing construction project for the picturesque church of Ai Yiorgi in Pano Gournes, which dates
back to the 1850s.
According to Father Leonidas, the plaster will be removed from the outside
walls, revealing the original stonework.
Also, the church yard will get a cement and tile floor, surrounding stone
walls and painted interior.
All
works are being done with the cooperation of the Iraklion Archeological
Services.
“When
all work is finished, all the cultural events such as the Clean Monday
celebration and all festivals will be held at this church, which is named
after Agios Yeorgios, the patron saint of the village,” Farther Leonidas
said.
