HERSONISSOS IN TORCH
RACE
Many
people from the Hersonissos
Township, young and old
alike, took an active part in the 6th Pancretan Torch Race of the
Volunteer Blood Donor Association, which kicked off at the Potamies village
square.
The
Association organizes this race every summer, in an effort to pass off the
message to donate blood, especially during the summer months.
The race
covered all the villages in the township, and ended at the St. Dimitrious Square
in Hersonissos.
The
official ceremony began at the Land of Lotus Eaters Camp in Agriana, where
the flame stayed for a day prior to the actual start of the race.

LIGHTS
OUT FOR
CHESS TOURNAMENT
The
First Filonidio Chess Tournament, sponsored by the Filonidio Cultural
Association of L. Hersonissou, attracted a large number of competitors from
the Hersonissos and Iraklion Chess Associations.
The
competition – 10-minute games of fast chess in seven rounds – was held at
the central square of the
Evangelistria
Church, and, in spite of
adverse conditions (much of the tournament had to take place by candle light
due to a power outage) the enthusiasm was obvious.
First in
the general category was Bounakis, who took the cup with six points.
In the
local player category, Marios Adamakis took the cup with five points.
In the
women’s category, Efi Maravgaki won with five points.
In
addition to the 1st place cups, 18 medals were given to other
players in the above categories.
“Such
events planned and realized, with the cooperation of the local government,
are important in order to demonstrate that there is civilization and culture
in our area, and to show a different Hersonissos than the one often shown in
the media,” said Mrs. Kalliopi Parlama, president of the Hersonissos Chess
Association.

PARTY TIME IN
ANO HERSONISSOS
As it is
each summer, Ano Hersonissos was the scene of many
exciting events and activities in commemorating the month of August.
There
were several thrilling concerts at the Fabrika, the first of which featured
the Manos Papathakis
six-piece Greek Rock group, which opened the proceedings in great style.
This was followed at the weekend by a local festival, organized by the
ladies of the village.
Hundreds
of local residents, with family and friends, turned out to
enjoy live music and a feast of local cuisine.
On August 14 - 15 came the really big celebrations, this time with the
village square
crowded with revelers, both local and tourists alike, on hand for all the
festivities.
Following the first event at the traditional Assumption of the Virgin Mary
Church, several
other activities were held over the two-day period, culminating with an
all-night celebration.
