I am married to a Cretan woman and we have lived in our own  flat in Kato Gouves for many years. I know areas develop and change, which is part of our modern life, but now I learned that they are turning Agios Konstantinos into a kafenion. I thought it was a joke. Apparently it is not.

Either the people in the township are crazy, have no idea what they are doing, and are stupid or just only interested in quick money. Rented for one year! We all know, when something has started, it will not be turned back. Just think of the bars on top of the waves in Gouves.

It is beyond our understanding that Greek Orthodox people have voted for something like this. Do they have no respect for their own religion, culture, history and their own people? But maybe Gouves wants to go the way of Malia and Hersonissos: cheap tourism, bars and alcohol. How can something like this find a majority in a town council? Apparently some locals have not learned their lessons. They don’t need anymore foreigners to destroy their country and culture. No, they are much better at it themselves! You can see my anger and disappointment. I sincerely hope you publish my letter and it will help to start a process of re-consideration.

Dear Mr. Zwicklbauer:

Apparently, you seem to be misinformed. The lovely Agios Konstantinos church in Kato Gouves is not being turned into a kafenion. However, a small parcel of land adjoining the church, and owned by the township, is the area being leased to a private individual for the purposes you state in your letter. Because of its location on the seafront next to the church, the move by the township is highly controversial and has much opposition from local residents, such as you.

Είμαι παντρεμένος με Κρητικιά και ζούμε στο δικό μας διαμέρισμα στις Κάτω Γούβες εδώ και πολλά χρόνια. Γνωρίζω ότι οι περιοχές εξελίσσονται και αλλάζουν, το οποίο αποτελεί μέρος της μοντέρνας ζωής μας, αλλά τώρα έμαθα ότι θα μετατρέψουν τον Άγιο Κωνσταντίνο σε καφενείο. Πίστεψα πως ήταν αστείο. Προφανώς δεν είναι.

Ή οι άνθρωποι στο δήμο είναι τρελοί, δεν έχουν ιδέα τι κάνουν, και είναι ηλίθιοι ή απλά ενδιαφέρονται για γρήγορο χρήμα. Νοικιασμένο για ένα χρόνο! Γνωρίζουμε όλοι, όταν κάτι αρχίσει, δεν γυρίζει πίσω. Απλά σκεφτείτε τα μπαρ πάνω στο κύμα στις Γούβες.

Αδυνατώ να κατανοήσω ότι οι Έλληνες Ορθόδοξοι έχουν ψηφίσει για κάτι τέτοιο. Δεν σέβονται καθόλου τη δική τους θρησκεία, τον πολιτισμό, την ιστορία και τους δικούς τους ανθρώπους; Αλλά ίσως οι Γούβες να θέλουν να τραβήξουν τον δρόμο των Μαλίων και της Χερσονήσου:φτηνός τουρισμός, μπαρ και αλκοόλ. Πώς μπορεί κάτι σαν αυτό να βρίσκει σύμφωνη την πλειοψηφία σε ένα δημοτικό συμβούλιο; Προφανώς μερικοί ντόπιοι δεν έχουν μάθει το μάθημά τους. Δεν χρειάζονται άλλους ξένους να καταστρέφουν τη χώρα τους και την κουλτούρα τους. Όχι, είναι πολύ καλύτεροι σ’αυτό οι ίδιοι! Μπορείτε να καταλάβετε το θυμό και την απογοήτευσή μου. Ειλικρινά ελπίζω ότι θα δημοσιεύσετε το γράμμα μου και ότι θα βοηθήσει να ξεκινήσει μία διαδικασία αναθεώρησης.

Προφανώς, μάλλον έχετε πάρει λάθος πληροφορίες. Η θαυμάσια εκκλησία του Αγίου Κωνσταντίνου στις Κάτω Γούβες δεν μετατρέπεται σε καφενείο. Ωστόσο, ένα μικρό κομμάτι γης γειτονικό με την εκκλησία, και που ανήκει στο δήμο, είναι η περιοχή που θα μισθωθεί σε έναν ιδιώτη για τους σκοπούς  που αναφέρετε στο γράμμα σας. Εξαιτίας της θέσης του στην παραλία δίπλα στην εκκλησία, η κίνηση από το δήμο είναι αρκετά αμφιλεγόμενη και έχει συναντήσει μεγάλες αντιθέσεις από τους ντόπιους, όπως εσείς.

Dear Editor:

We were delighted to hear that the Demos was introducing re-cycling of rubbish, and providing for this, separate blue-wheelie bins. However, there are only two such bins in Pano Gouves and these rapidly fill up (often, it must be said, with the wrong rubbish!). I have noticed in Old Hersonissos that there are ten such blue bins between the Dia Supermarket and the junction to the Kastelli road, and so I often resort to taking my “blue” rubbish there. I have heard that there are large numbers of blue bins stored at the old American base in Gournes. Why?

Further, pertaining to the letter by Colin Paton in  last month’s Khronicles, I do so agree about the dangers of quad bikes, both to their often very young, inexperienced drivers, and to other road users. I have been on holiday in several Greek islands and every time the tour reps have warned against hiring scooters, unless one is an experienced rider. Do they not warn young people of the very high accident rate for quad bikes here? And I feel sure that the children one sees driving them most certainly do not have either experience or a license of any kind.

Your complaint about the lack of an adequate number of recycling bins is well noted, and is among many received by our office. We are not aware of other “blue” bins being stored at the base, but we will look into it. Also, your comments regarding the horrific problem of quad bikes are indeed justified. It is a serious situation, which our officials must address immediately.

Ήμαστε πανευτυχείς όταν μάθαμε ότι ο Δήμος ξεκινούσε ανακύκλωση απορριμμάτων, και για να το εξασφαλίσει αυτό, ξεχωριστούς μπλε συρόμενους κάδους. Ωστόσο, υπάρχουν μόνο δύο τέτοιοι κάδοι στις Πάνω Γούβες και αυτοί γεμίζουν ταχύτατα (συχνά, πρέπει να ειπωθεί, με λάθος σκουπίδια!). Έχω παρατηρήσει ότι στην Παλιά Χερσόνησο υπάρχουν δέκα τέτοιοι μπλε κάδοι ανάμεσα στο Σούπερ Μάρκετ Dia και τον κόμβο προς το δρόμο του Καστελίου, και έτσι συχνά καταφεύγω στο να πηγαίνω τα «μπλε» μου σκουπίδια εκεί. Έχω ακούσει ότι υπάρχει μεγάλος αριθμός μπλε κάδων αποθηκευμένοι στην παλιά Αμερικάνικη βάση στις Γούρνες. Γιατί; Επιπλέον, σχετικά με το γράμμα του Κόλιν Πέιτον στα Χρονικά του περασμένου μήνα, πράγματι συμφωνώ και εγώ σχετικά με τους κινδύνους των γουρούνων, και για τους συχνά πολύ νέους, άπειρους οδηγούς τους. Έχω πάει διακοπές σε αρκετά Ελληνικά νησιά και κάθε φορά οι εκπρόσωποι των τουριστικών γραφείων προειδοποιούν κατά της ενοικίασης σκούτερ, εκτός εάν κάποιος είναι έμπειρος οδηγός. Δεν προειδοποιούν τους νέους για το πολύ υψηλό ποσοστό ατυχημάτων με τις γουρούνες εδώ; Και είμαι σίγουρη ότι τα παιδιά που βλέπει κάποιος να τις οδηγούν σίγουρα δεν έχουν ούτε εμπειρία ούτε και κανενός είδους δίπλωμα.

Το παράπονό σου σχετικά με την έλλειψη επαρκούς αριθμού κάδων ανακύκλωσης έχει ήδη σημειωθεί, και είναι ανάμεσα σε πολλά που έχουν ληφθεί από το γραφείο μας. Δεν γνωρίζουμε άλλους «μπλε» κάδους να υπάρχουν σε απόθεμα στη βάση, αλλά θα το εξετάσουμε. Επίσης, τα σχόλιά σου που αφορούν το τρομακτικό πρόβλημα των γουρούνων μηχανών είναι πραγματικά δικαιολογημένα. Είναι μία σοβαρή κατάσταση, την οποία πρέπει να αντιμετωπίσουν άμεσα οι επίσημες αρχές μας.

Dear Editor:

As an OLD American Air Force member who spent six years on the Base in Gournes, I have watched the fight over the base’s usage. As I stated some time ago, I hope the local people will win the battle to use the base. But it has been some time since I have seen anything about the fight. What is the latest on the American base usage? It is nice to see many of the buildings are in use now and more being worked on. Many of the people who were stationed there read your paper so I hope your can fill us in.

Dear Gary:

Not much has been happening this summer, but the fight goes on. Although several plans have been submitted for the usage of the remaining base area, the right of “ownership,” so to speak, is still being debated by the Gouves Township and the Iraklion Prefecture. The township is demanding, and rightfully so, that it be in control of the entire area, with no “outsiders” forcing projects at the site without the approval of local residents. We’re sure the battle will heat up again in the upcoming months, and we will, of course, keep you informed when it does.
