Ian Hibell, 74, a cyclist from the UK who has pedalled around the world for more than 40 years, was killed by a hit and run driver in main-land Greece.

Mr. Hibell, who died at the scene, was on the road between Athens and Salonika when he was hit by a car which, according to police, was apparently in a race with another. Although the driver fled the scene he was later arrested.

Mr. Hibell’s cycling exploits have been well recorded, and he has set several records in the world of long-distance cycle touring while pedalling the equivalent of ten times around the Equator since 1963.
