TSIKOUTHIA AND FRENCH FRIES

According to the many participants, one of the best events of the season was the Tsikouthia and French Fries event at the base in Gournes, sponsored by The Cultural Association of Anopoli, in cooperation with the Association of the Traditional Distillers of Tsikouthia in the Iraklion Province.

The event re-introduced our traditional drink of raki, which perhaps has been set aside a bit these past years in favor of all the “in” cocktails served in pubs in our townships.

That took care of the drinks. Now for the snacks, Vasiliki Alexaki-Hronaki who pens The Khronicles’ Education column, and one of the organizers, served us with an ode to the french-fry:

Ode To The French Fry

From all the potatoes
it’s only you I like
because you are the fried potato
you are the world’s delight.

And I get this happy memory
of my family in years past
my mom frying potatoes for the kids
the hungry folks’ repast.

 Your fragrance circles around us
challenging our senses
standing around the frying pan
to our stomachs we are servants

And if you are from Lasithi
our appetite rises
because it’s well known
the Lasithi potato and beans
are wonderfully grown

From all the gardens
the potato mustn’t be missed
because the Cretan seed
is not genetically altered
but it’s pure and sweet!
