HERSONISSOS KAPI ON TOUR

By Robin Williams

Ninety members of the Hersonissos KAPI, an organization for mostly elderly residents of the township, enjoyed a recent four-day cruise to Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Kusadasi and Patmos.

The outing started with pick-ups from Pano Hersonisso, Potamies, and Limin Hersonissou, before setting sail for the first port-of-call, Athens, aboard the Monarch liner Ocean Countess, which offered excellent meals and fine entertainment over the four-day period.

Docking at Santorini

After Athens, the cruise continued to Santorini, where, as the ship entered the Caldera, it was like floating inside a giant open-air geological museum.

Some of the party braved the donkey/mule rides up to the cobbled streets to marvel at the panoramic views, but still found time for the essential shopping sprees.

Mykonos

Overnight, the liner edged closer to Mykonos with its famous windmills, narrow streets lined with shops and the Venetian style of the old harbour, where many of the buildings over-hang the sea.

Patmos, with its Monastery of St. John and Grotto, built over 900 years ago, was the next day’s adventure, and the last stop on the tour.
At the end of the cruise, much was made of the work of the KAPI and their efforts to keep the social side of life in the villages alive and well.
