THE PASSING OF PAULIE

He was a familiar figure around Anopoli-Kokkini Hani area . . . a man called “friend” by locals and tourists, alike . . . straddling his motorcycle or riding atop his skaftiko . . .holding court in the kafenion, while captivating patrons with tales of his exploits.

He was Polidefkis Liapakis, known simply as Paulie, and he was struck down by an assailant’s bullet in the streets of his home village, Anopoli.

He was rushed to hospital, where, for several days, surgeons unsuccessfully fought to save his life.

His attacker’s motive remains unclear – some say he was a relative, some say he was mentally unbalanced.

What is clear, however, is that Paulie, who was a youthful 68-year-old, is no longer with us . . . and many mourn his passing.
