ALIKARNASSOS NEWS

HEALTH SEMINAR
FOR UNEMPLOYED WOMEN

Forty unemployed women – 20 of them Roma – took part in a health seminar on “health and the management of major health factors,” which was given with the collaboration of the Office of Social Services of the Alikarnassos Township and the National School of Public Health.

The seminar included: policy issues for the development and the promotion of public health and education programs aimed at vulnerable groups like the unemployed.

This particular group was chosen because unemployed people, due to lack of work, might smoke more, certainly experience increased stress and could eat less healthy foods and have a low self-esteem.

During the seminar, discussions were developed in reference to self care; stress; smoking; alcohol; a healthy diet and control of body weight; diseases and vaccines; health and safety for workers.

GROUP DISCUSSES
RENEWABLE ENERGY

Interesting conclusions on the subject of developing and using renewable sources of energy were reached at a meeting which took place at the Nea Alikarnassos Town Hall, under the aegis of the program: “Development of Network for Exploring and Developing Renewable Sources of Energy between the Borders of Greece and Cyprus."

“The Nea Alikarnassos Municipality constitutes perhaps the most environmentally overloaded region in the greater metropolitan area of Iraklion," commented Mayor Vangelis Sisamakis. "Everyone must understand the big effort that we, as the local government, make to smooth over the consequences.

“Our environmental strategy should not be exhausted in confronting only the fixed problems,” he continued. “We believe that local governments must pioneer and make their environmental footprints with real and comprehensible examples, which are the reasons why we choose to be involved in this across-the-border effort for developing renewable energy sources.”

The INTERREG program was presented by the manager of the Department of Programming, Development and Social Policies, Mrs. Renia Drosou.

The work concerns the development and use of soft forms of energy and will be supplemented by a study of “Energy Saving Application” in town halls and other municipal buildings and the installation of photovoltaic systems in these buildings.
