HERSONISSOS NEWS

LIFE SUPPORT CLASS FOR HEALTH TEAM

Hersonissos volunteers from the Municipal Health Team, and the Hersonissos Team “I Protect,” have attended a seminar on “basic life support and the use of an automated external defibrillator."

The seminar was the result of a cooperation of the Hersonissos Municipality with the company, “Prehospital Care,” and with the approval of the Cardioresuscitation National Committee of the Central Board of Health.

With the successful completion of the seminar, the volunteers have an official certification based on European standards.

It allows them the possibility to administer First Aid in emergencies where resuscitation and defibrillation are warranted, which in the case of cardiac arrest is of vital importance in order to restore heart rhythm and it can double the probabilities of survival.

In the framework of this volunteer action, the Hersonissos Township has supplied two portable automated external defibrillators, which are located in the Town Hall itself and the Municipal Athletic Organization in Hersonissos for emergencies.

According to a town spokesperson, "the volunteer programs have drawn a lot of interest, as their aim is not only to educate on health matters, but also to promote social solidarity and cohesion among the local residents."

Now, due to the positive response of this seminar, another "basic life support" workshop is being planned for the Hersonissos Municipal workers.

RECYCLING OF ORGANIC WASTE

The Hersonissos Township, in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Institute of Environmental Researches, is promoting a program to recycle organic waste, otherwise known as compost making, it was announced.

Through this program, the township will promote a pilot recycling of organic waste which is separated at the source (residences, hotels, shops) with special bins (compost makers) which will be placed within the residential areas of the town.

Such an alternative waste management, other than the obvious benefits to the environment, also presents economic advantages, according to Mayor Spiros Danelis.

"The people have a continuous source of free natural fertilizer for their gardens and the municipality cuts down on costs of carting garbage to the city dump," he said.

The township will supply free of charge an unspecified number of compost-making bins to the residents.
