MORE ON MALIA

(Editor's Note: We've received so many letters regarding our "Malia Madness" coverage that it would be impossible to print them all. However, most readers put the blame for all the problems squarely in the hands of the bar/club owners.  Following is just a sampling of this month's letters, followed by those on more general topics.)

Dear Editor:

In reply to your question in the October Khronicles "Malia Madness: Will The Nightmare Reoccur Next Year?" Of course it will, and it will continue until something is done about the policing of the area and the bar and club owners. Police officers here seem more interested in writing tickets for motoring offences than doing real police work. They need to get out of their cars and jeeps and walk the beat more often whilst issuing tickets to all offenders not just the chosen few. On numerous occasions I have witnessed locals as well as tourists breaking laws only to see the police turn a blind eye and head for the nearest kafenion.
As for Malia Madness stop putting all the blame on the tourists and tour operators and take a look at the locals' approach to entertaining them. Ask this question to the bar owners: A group of obviously drunk youths enter your bar and order another round of drinks. What do you do? A) Tell them "I'm sorry but I think you've had enough" or B) "Certainly you get 2 for 1 and a Free shot". I think you know the answer you will get. Malia entertainment is based on getting drunker than drunk and that's what needs to be addressed, local entertainment. When I first arrived in Malia in 1988 there was a good mix of old and young tourists along with a good mix of bars and restaurants and shops down the beach road. Now the beach road is a bar next to a bar next to a club next to a bar etc.
Cut down the number of drinking establishments and start promoting Malia as a place for young and old alike, and improve the live entertainment, making it suitable for a wider audience. Any violent or indecent behaviour should be punished with an immediate deportation order banning the perpetrator from entering Greece or its islands for a minimum of 5 years.

Ως απάντηση στο ερώτημά σας στα Χρονικά του Οκτωβρίου «Η Τρέλα στα Μάλια: Ο Εφιάλτης Θα Εμφανιστεί Ξανά Την Επόμενη Χρονιά;» Φυσικά και θα ξαναεμφανιστεί, και θα συνεχίσει μέχρι να γίνει κάτι για την αστυνόμευση της περιοχής και των ιδιοκτητών των μπαρ και των κλαμπ. Οι αστυνομικοί εδώ φαίνεται να ενδιαφέρονται περισσότερο να γράφουν κλήσεις για παραβάσεις οχημάτων από το να κάνουν πραγματική αστυνομική δουλειά. Πρέπει να βγουν από τα αυτοκίνητα και τα τζιπ τους και να περιπολούν περπατώντας και να  γράφουν κλήσεις για όλους τους παραβάτες και όχι μόνο στους λίγους επίλεκτους. Σε αναρίθμητες περιπτώσεις έχω γίνει μάρτυρας ντόπιων καθώς και τουριστών που παραβιάζουν τους νόμους και η αστυνομία να κάνει τα στραβά μάτια και να κατευθύνεται στο πλησιέστερο καφενείο. Όσο για την Τρέλα των Μαλίων σταματήστε να ρίχνετε όλο το φταίξιμο στους τουρίστες και τα τουριστικά γραφεία και να ρίξετε μια ματιά στην προσέγγιση των ντόπιων για την ψυχαγωγία τους. Κάντε αυτή την ερώτηση στους ιδιοκτήτες των μπαρ: Μία ομάδα φανερά μεθυσμένων νέων μπαίνουν στο μπαρ σας και παραγγέλουν άλλο ένα γύρο από ποτά. Τι κάνετε; Α) Τους λέτε «Συγνώμη αλλά νομίζω ότι ήπιατε αρκετά» ή Β) «Βεβαίως και θα πάρετε 2 ποτά για 1 και ένα Δωρεάν σφηνάκι». Πιστεύω ότι γνωρίζετε την απάντηση. Η ψυχαγωγία των Μαλίων βασίζεται στο να γίνεσαι πιο μεθυσμένος από το μεθυσμένο και αυτό είναι που πρέπει να αντιμετωπιστεί, η ντόπια ψυχαγωγία. Όταν έφτασα για πρώτη φορά στα Μάλια το 1988 υπήρχε μία καλή μίξη ηλικιωμένων και νεαρών τουριστών μαζί με μία καλή μίξη μπαρ και εστιατορίων και καταστημάτων στον παραλιακό δρόμο. Τώρα η παραλιακή οδός είναι το ένα μπαρ δίπλα στο άλλο μπαρ δίπλα σε ένα κλαμπ δίπλα σε ένα μπαρ κλπ.

Μειώστε τον αριθμό των οινοποτείων και αρχίστε να προωθείτε τα Μάλια ως ένα μέρος και για τους νέους και τους ηλικιωμένους, και βελτιώστε τη ζωντανή ψυχαγωγία , κάνοντάς την κατάλληλη για ένα ευρύτερο κοινό. Οποιαδήποτε βίαιη ή αναξιοπρεπής συμπεριφορά θα πρέπει να τιμωρείται με άμεση διαταγή απέλασης που θα απαγορεύει στο δράστη να εισέρχεται στην Ελλάδα ή τα νησιά της για ένα χρονικό διάστημα τουλάχιστον 5 ετών.

Dear Editor:

As an expat from London, who has lived in Karteros for the past five years, I always read the yearly "Malia Madness" stories with interest. Anyone who does not know Malia would be forgiven for thinking that it is some quiet little Greek backwater that is "invaded" each year by marauding British youth. Can I respectfully point out that Malia bar and nightclub owners, and indeed the hotels, positively encourage these cash-fat British people to spend and drink like there's no tomorrow?  It takes two sides for an "invasion" – one to invade, the other to have something worth invading.  Malia's problems are self-inflicted and I don't see bars there turning people away at five in the morning if there's more cash to be made. I cannot apologise for the activities of the British youth there, many of them have never been away from home before without their parents and – coming from an increasingly repressed country – they do indeed "let their hair down" in fairly crass ways, but, as mentioned, it does take two to tango!

Ως ένας εκπατρισμένος από το Λονδίνο, που ζει στον Καρτερό τα τελευταία πέντε χρόνια, πάντα διαβάζω τα ετήσια άρθρα «Η Τρέλα των Μαλίων» με ενδιαφέρον. Όποιος δεν γνωρίζει τα Μάλια θα συγχωρεθεί αν σκεφτεί ότι πρόκειται για ένα ήσυχο μικρό Ελληνικό λιμνάζον ύδωρ όπου κάνουν «εισβολή» κάθε χρόνο Βρετανοί νέοι. Μπορώ να επισημάνω με σεβασμό ότι οι ιδιοκτήτες μπαρ και νυχτερινών κλαμπ των  Μαλίων, και πράγματι και τα ξενοδοχεία, θετικά ενθαρρύνουν αυτούς τους γεμάτους χρήματα Βρετανούς να ξοδεύουν και να πίνουν σα να μην υπάρχει αύριο; Η εισβολή θέλει «δύο»- έναν να εισβάλει και τον άλλο να έχει κάτι που αξίζει να εισβάλουν γι’αυτό. Τα προβλήματα των Μαλίων είναι αυτοδημιούργητα και δεν βλέπω κανένα μπαρ να αποτρέπει τον κόσμο στις πέντε το πρωί αν μπορούν να βγουν κι άλλα μετρητά. Δεν μπορώ να απολογηθώ για τις δραστηριότητες των Βρετανών νέων εκεί, πολλοί από τους οποίους δεν έχουν φύγει ποτέ πριν από το σπίτι τους χωρίς τους γονείς τους και - προερχόμενοι από μία χώρα που με αυξανόμενο ρυθμό καταστέλλεται - πράγματι «ξεσαλώνουν» με σχετικά χονδροειδείς τρόπους, αλλά, όπως αναφέρθηκε, το τανγκό θέλει δύο!

Dear Editor:

Having read the Malia article in your October edition I felt compelled to put fingers to keyboard, since I work in the industry. English people have an appalling reputation in Crete, mainly because of what happens in Malia, and locals have us down as being drink-fuelled whores and thugs, but there is also another side to the story. Tour operators such as 18-30 encourage kids  to participate in pub crawls, and their reps are given “back-handers” or free drinks all season by bar owners to host such an activity in the their establishments.

In Crete there is a term for illegal booze, “bomba,” and this cheap home-made alcohol has been found to induce the same chemical reaction as the drug Rohypnol (the date rape drug). In Malia there are young guys and girls outside the bars encouraging guests in with the promise of a free shot, in many cases the shot or free drink they are getting is “bomba.”  It is a fact that there are no drinking restrictions in Crete, alcohol is accessible 24 hours a day - seven days a week, and holiday makers are encouraged to drink all day and all night. If this situation is to be sorted out there has to be some sort of restriction on drinking times, unlike here, at home if someone is drunk in Crete they are never refused more drinks, rather they are encouraged into spending more euros. The problem with Malia is mainly down to the people who seem to be controlling the town – the bar owners.

IT'S NOT KOSHER

Dear Editor:

I was very interested to read in the Khronicles that there was a kosher bakery at Florines 7 Poros Heraklion. I decided to go there with a friend to see if I could buy a black rye bread, or crispy bagels.  When we got to the bakery, I asked if it was really a kosher bakery, and the owner said yes.  I asked for the bread and was handed (without gloves) an ordinary brown bread, that you can get anywhere, nor did it remotely resemble black bread, let alone rye bread.  I then asked for crispy bagels, and described what they were, and she showed me a bread ring, and very proudly announced, we have this one with HAM in the middle.  I nearly choked when she said this…kosher bakery, I think not. Could you also tell Maurice Makowsy, the gentleman enquiring about kosher food, that this bakery is not for him, and also that there is just one synagogue on Crete, in Xania.

A FRIENDLY NOTE

Dear Editor:

I made my first visit to Kato Gouves today and picked up a copy of The Khronicles, the first time I had seen it. It's so useful to have a bi-lingual paper. I wish there was one in the area where I live. Imagine my surprise when I turned to the Letters to the Editor page and came across my friend Ursula Andrade's name, and my name, and the fact that Ursula was trying to make contact with me. We have known each other since the 1960s when she was working in England and joined the Oldham Youth Choir, of which I was a member. Eventually she went back to Switzerland and I went to college but we corresponded regularly down the years but, as she says in her letter, we lost touch with each other shortly before we moved to Crete. RIP EXCEL

Dear Editor:

I have just had a look at the October edition. As a regular visitor to your area, I was surprised to see no mention of the collapse of Excel/Kosmar, as I know that many of your readers (including my family and myself) will have travelled to Crete with one of the companies involved this summer. We are waiting (hopefully) to see if a new company will take over at least some of the flight slots and accommodations; if not, presumably it will have a big effect on your area, and indeed on the whole of the Greek Island market from the UK.

NON-POSTAL SERVICE

Dear Editor:

Perhaps you can find out what’s going on with the Greek postal system. I find it quite incredible that while we are in the 21^st century, the Greek post office seems to be using a system like the American Midwest of the 1800s – the Pony Express. On the way to Iraklion, the carrier is ambushed by red Indians and the mail is never seen again. Since I moved here in 2007, I have spent about 35-40 euros on mail to England of which approximately one quarter has been delivered…where is the rest? Recently, I sent an important letter recorded delivery at a cost of 4.10 euros, instead of the usual 70 cents, thinking I could trace it as it had to be signed for. Three weeks later it had not turned up and still hasn’t. The Kokkini Hani post office told me to go to the Iraklion, since they have computers. Iraklion said it was probably in Sparta, but not sure. I am paying for a service I am not getting and no one can tell me why. Speaking to people from the other countries, it’s not only problems with the UK, but all of Europe.

Ίσως μπορέσετε να ανακαλύψετε τι συμβαίνει με το Ελληνικό ταχυδρομικό σύστημα. Το βρίσκω αρκετά απίστευτο ότι ενώ βρισκόμαστε στον 21^ο αιώνα, το Ελληνικό ταχυδρομείο φαίνεται να χρησιμοποιεί ένα σύστημα όπως εκείνο της Αμερικάνικης Δύσης του 1800 - το Pony Express. Στο δρόμο για το Ηράκλειο, στήνεται ενέδρα στο μεταφορέα από ερυθρόδερμους Ινδιάνους και η αλληλογραφία εξαφανίζεται. Από τότε που μετακόμισα εδώ το 2007, έχω ξοδέψει περίπου 35-40 ευρώ για αλληλογραφία στην Αγγλία από την οποία περίπου ένα τέταρτο έχει φτάσει...πού είναι η υπόλοιπη; Πρόσφατα, έστειλα ένα σημαντικό γράμμα με καταγεγραμμένη παράδοση με κόστος 4.10 ευρώ, αντί των συνηθισμένων 70 λεπτών, με τη σκέψη ότι θα μπορούσα να το εντοπίσω μια και η παράδοση γίνεται με υπογραφή. Τρεις εβδομάδες αργότερα δεν είχε εμφανιστεί και δεν έχει παραδοθεί ακόμη. Το ΕΛΤΑ του Κοκκίνη Χάνι μου είπε να πάω στο Ηράκλειο, μια και έχουν υπολογιστές. Το Ηράκλειο είπε ότι ήταν πιθανόν στη Σπάρτη, αλλά δεν ήταν σίγουροι. Πληρώνω για μία υπηρεσία που δεν λαμβάνω και κανένας δεν μπορεί να μου πει γιατί. Μιλώντας σε ανθρώπους από άλλες χώρες, δεν υπάρχουν προβλήματα μόνο με το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, αλλά με ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη.
