The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Based on a novel by John Boyne and directed by Mark Herman, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, witnesses the Holocaust through the uncomprehending eyes of eight-year-old Bruno (Asa Butterfield). At first, neither we nor Bruno's mother (Vera Farmiga) are sure what part Bruno's father (David Thewlis), a Nazi officer, plays in the war, but it soon becomes clear he has something to do with the nearby concentration camp. Bruno sneaks out to the fence of what he thinks is a farm and meets Shmel (Jack Scanlon), a shaven-headed boy the same age. They strike up a friendship which has terrible consequences.

Some of the historical facts are a bit off key and it does take some getting used to German officers talking with upper crust English accents but the power of the story and the performances soon put these to one side.

In his first feature film, Butterfield plays an excellent part, with strong portrayals from the rest of the cast.  Although the film is based on a novel which is aimed at young teens, it is much too intense for children and has a tragic ending. This film will remain with you for a long time.
