With opening ceremonies that included a blessing by three priests, Halkiadakis, Crete's largest supermarket chain, opened its newest store on the main street in Kokkini Hani, just four days before Christmas.

The 1,100 square-metre store, which features parking for about 30 cars, is the 33rd location for Halkiadakis, the Iraklion-based company which began operations in 1980.

"We are excited about being part of this wonderful community of Kokkini Hani, and we're warmed by the tremendous welcome we've received," said a company spokesperson.

Hundreds of well-wishers from among the public, as well as numerous invited guests were on hand for the celebration. Officiating at the blessing (insert) were, from left: Fathers Dimitrios Mihoudis of Gouves, Yeorgios Metohianakis, Kokkini Hani and Antonios Hourdakis, also Kokkini Hani.
