THE RED BUG

After the red bug, also known as Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, had reached our neighbourhood in Kokkini Hani, I started my internet research to find a solution for this bug-problem. Most of the sites just tell facts, like all the Mediterranean countries are suffering and no pesticides can help because the larvae are inside the trunk. Suddenly I found something that might help and we tried it.
Pour hot soapy water into the heart of the palm leaves and into holes in the trunk (if they have already started to grab in from the sides). Use hot soapy water at least 60 degrees above zero. Surprise, surprise, it really worked out. The next day we found lots of dead bugs and larvae. Of course you have to repeat this procedure (we do this once a week), and will continue till the temperatures are below 18 degrees. Fact is our palms are still alive. Finding nearly every day new bugs doesn't make it easier. So if you see one of these red devils, do not show any mercy, just remember there will be up to 500 new ones if you do so.

Ο ΚΟΚΚΙΝΟΣ ΚΑΝΘΑΡΟΣ

Αγαπητέ Συντάκτη:

Αφού ο κόκκινος κάνθαρος, γνωστός επίσης ως Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, είχε φτάσει στη γειτονιά μας στου Κοκκίνη Χάνι, ξεκίνησα την έρευνά μου στο διαδίκτυο για να βρω μία λύση γι’αυτό το εντομοπρόβλημα. Οι περισσότερες από τους ιστοχώρους απλά παρουσιάζουν τα δεδομένα, όπως το ότι όλες οι Μεσογειακές χώρες υποφέρουν και κανένα εντομοκτόνο δεν μπορεί να βοηθήσει επειδή οι κάμπιες είναι μέσα στον κορμό. Ξαφνικά ανακάλυψα κάτι που ίσως βοηθήσει και το δοκιμάσαμε.

Βάλτε ζεστή σαπουνάδα μέσα στην καρδιά των φοινικόφυλλων και μέσα σε τρύπες στον κορμό (αν έχουν ήδη αρχίσει να μπαίνουν προς τα μέσα από τα πλάγια). Χρησιμοποιείστε ζεστή σαπουνάδα σε τουλάχιστον 60 βαθμούς πάνω από το μηδέν. Και έκπληξη, έκπληξη, είχε πραγματικά αποτέλεσμα. Την επόμενη μέρα βρήκαμε πολλά νεκρά έντομα και κάμπιες. Φυσικά πρέπει να επαναλάβετε αυτή τη διαδικασία (το κάνουμε μία φορά την εβδομάδα), και θα συνεχίσετε μέχρι οι θερμοκρασίες να είναι υπό των 18 βαθμών. Γεγονός είναι ότι οι φοίνικές μας είναι ακόμη ζωντανοί. Το να βρίσκουμε σχεδόν κάθε μέρα νέα έντομα δεν το κάνει ευκολότερο. Επομένως αν δείτε ένα από αυτα τα κόκκινα διαβολάκια, μην το λυπηθείτε καθόλου, απλά θυμηθείτε ότι θα υπάρξουν μέχρι και 500 καινούρια αν το κάνετε αυτό.

IT'S THE LAW

Dear Editor:

I would just like to make a small comment (of course) on Petra's pet column, although I thought it was very good and appropriate as both Greeks and foreigners seem to want the dogs off the leads. However, it didn't explain that apart from being dangerous etc., having your dog running free (with or without someone's supervision) is actually against the Law 3170/03.
I apologize if this seems like I am criticizing, this is not my intention. I just think people should be more aware of the law. Even though it is not being enforced, it doesn't mean we should disregard and/or disobey it.

Good point, and thanks for bringing that to our attention. While the law is not usually enforced, we've seen cases where, if an accident occurs due to a dog running free, the owner will be charged and fined a substantial amount.

ΕΙΝΑΙ Ο ΝΟΜΟΣ

Αγαπητέ Συντάκτη:

Θα ήθελα απλά να κάνω ένα μικρό σχόλιο (φυσικά) για τη στήλη με τα κατοικίδια της Πέτρα, αν και νόμιζα ότι ήταν πολύ καλή και σωστή καθώς και Έλληνες και ξένοι φαίνεται να θέλουν τους σκύλους χωρίς λουριά. Ωστόσο, δεν μας εξήγησε ότι εκτός από το ότι είναι επικίνδυνο κλπ. το να έχεις το σκύλο σου να τρέχει ελεύθερος (με ή χωρίς την επίβλεψη κάποιου) είναι στην πραγματικότητα αντίθετο με το νόμο 3170/03.

Ζητώ συγνώμη αν αυτό ακούγεται επικριτικό, δεν είναι αυτή η πρόθεσή μου. Απλά πιστεύω ότι ο κόσμος πρέπει να είναι περισσότερο ενημερωμένος για το νόμο. Ακόμη κι αν δεν επιβάλλεται, δε σημαίνει ότι πρέπει να τον παραβλέπουμε ή να τον παραβιάζουμε.

Σωστή η παρατήρηση, και σ’ευχαριστώ που το μας το επισήμανες αυτό. Ενώ ο νόμος δεν επιβάλλεται συνήθως, έχουμε δει περιπτώσεις όπου, αν συμβεί ένα ατύχημα εξαιτίας ενός σκύλου που τρέχει ελεύθερος, θα απαγγελθούν κατηγορίες στον ιδιοκτήτη και θα του επιβληθεί ένα σημαντικό ποσό ως πρόστιμο.

Dear Editor:

My letter is in response to M. Manousakis / Episkopi.
I am offended by his response that the editor/writer is using "Texas Cowboy English"
 in his writing. What exactly is Texas Cowboy English? Americans and Europeans
may spell words with slight differences, but all surely know their meaning.
Nowhere in his writings have I seen "Ya'll" or "Howdy, Partner", or
"Mosey on down to the corral,"
which to me, would be "Texas Cowboy English."
Please get your facts straight. Neighbor and Neighbour sound exactly the same
and have the same meaning. There are not only Greeks living on Crete, but people
from all over the world, and each have their own way of saying and pronouncing
and even spelling different words, all with the same meaning.  Besides, what's wrong with
teaching children the differences between cultures and how Americans and Europeans
may spell words differently?  In the future, please think about what you are saying
and don't be so narrow-minded.
