Mayor Nikolakakis gets help from 'friends' lighting the tree

More than 300 happy parents and excited kids were on hand for the 3rd Annual Khronicles Children’s Christmas Card Competition and Tree-Lighting Festival, featuring the arrival of Santa Claus, on December 14 in the parking lot of one of the co-sponsors, Hatzis Super Market, Kokkini Hani.

Gouves Township Mayor Yiorgos Nikolakakis did the honours of officially lighting the three-metre-tall tree, which will remain lit throughout the holiday season.

Following the tree-lighting ceremonies, judging was held for the Christmas card competition, in which children were asked to create a holiday card on the subject: What Christmas means to me.

The judges, local artists Popi Koutendaki, who runs a workshop in Gournes, and Eleni Hrisou, who has her workshop in Gouves, selected first, second and third place winners from over a hundred entries in three age categories  – six and under; seven to nine, and 10 to 12.

In the first category, Lefteris Panayiotakis won top honours, while Ioanna Konstandaki was 2nd and Nikos Sfakianakis won 3rd place.

In the seven to nine group, 1st place went to Anastasia Memah, 2nd to Eva & Elena Panayiotaki, 3rd to Kalia Xenaki.

The final group saw Vasilis Spyrithakis with 1st place, while Evi Sifaki took second and in 3rd place was Anis Moundavaris.

Because of its unique presentation, the judges decided on an "honourable mention" award for the Elia Primary School, 3rd and 4th grades, for their collective multi-Christmas card composition.

The judges announced that the winners who were not on hand to accept their prizes can pick them up at The Khronicles office in Kokkini Hani.

While the cards were being viewed by the judges, the partygoers were treated to a special performance of holiday music and carols by a group from the Iraklion School of Music, under the direction of music teacher Eva Koutsoyiannaki.

In addition to the music, there were tables loaded with complimentary sweets, snacks and refreshments, which were contributed by more than 50 of the town’s shops and businesses, who also donated all the gifts.

As the last of the prizes were awarded, the sound of bells was heard, and suddenly Santa came down from the roof of an adjoining building with a jolly ho, ho, ho – to the delight of the cheering children.

One by one, the kids lined up to greet Santa, telling him what they wanted for Christmas, while Santa's elves, Michaela, Veta, Sascha, Renie and Gudrun distributed gifts from his bag.

In addition to meeting Santa, the kids were treated to hilarious antics by Helen the Clown, who kept the crowd entertained with games and balloon tricks. Also, there was face-painting by Jill, another local artist.

Among the large crowd joining in the celebration, in addition to the mayor, were Vice Mayor Yiorgos Merambeliotakis, Councilwoman Viki Manousaki, Father Dimitrios Mihouthis and other local dignitaries.

"This is a wonderful event, and it gets more popular every year," said Mayor Nikolakakis. "It was my pleasure to be invited to light the tree, and take an active role in the festivities."

Councilwoman Manousaki said: "What a great idea for the children of the township, you can tell by their faces how much they enjoy it. The Khronicles should be applauded for organizing such an event."

By the end of the evening, as the happy crowd began making its way home – all the children with gifts in their hands – the parting words of Santa Claus could still be heard echoing through the streets of Kokkini Hani – Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
