WOMEN'S GROUP PRESENTS
CANCER PREVENTION EVENT

By Niki Yiamalaki

Irida, the Gouves women's association, organized an informative event on the subject of "Cervical Cancer – Prevention – Vaccination."

The event took place at the Gournes Exhibition Center with Obstetrician-Gynaecologist Mrs. Natasha Papageorgiou as the main speaker, and had an enormous appeal to the women from all parts of the Demos, proving the need that exists for information.

Dr. Papageorgiou stressed the necessity of vaccinating young women to the age of 25, without excluding higher ages. As she pointed out, "studies are being done to determine the validity of vaccinating women up to 50 years of age."

She also emphasized the usefulness of vaccinating young boys who are, as the doctor reported, the carriers of the virus which causes this particular form of cancer.

Also, Dr. Papageorgiou strongly suggested the use of condoms for all sexual contacts, pointing out that "prophylactics save lives."

It was a positive and constructive event and it revealed the need for such an association in Gouves.

At the end of the lectures, a ceremony was held for the cutting of the New Year’s cake, which was sponsored by the Women’s Cooperative "Minthi."

The presiding board informed the women present on the progress of the ongoing structuring of the association and the soon to be called general assembly where the board of governors will be elected as a last step in legalizing the association.
