Environmental Actions

In Gouves, there have been recent efforts from educational institutions, and, in cooperation with the agronomist of the Gouves Demos Mr. Yianni Zithianaki, to upgrade our environment. Mr. Zithianakis shows a particular sensitivity in environmental matters. Already last month he helped at the tree planting for the playground at the Axion Esti square in Kokkini Hani. The effort was initiated by the Parent and Guardian Association of the Kokkini Hani Grammar School. It was further supported by the Demos which embraced this effort and we hope it continues to other issues.

Mr. Zithianakis also hopes that soon the effort to showcase the splendid Aposelemi Gorge with its rare biotope will be completed.  Also in the area of the gorge, there are installations from Gouves (toilets and a length of the path).

Mr. Zithianakis hopes a funding programme will be completed soon for further improvements. Also, the gorge of St. Anastasia is expected to get funds supported by the Episkopi Demos. For your information, the Iraklion School of Arts is running an environmental programme entitled "The St. Anastasia Gorge, journeys of environmental devaluation," where the destruction to the gorge by the Anopolis quarry and cement mine is recorded.

We have had an event at Galype in Episkopi, together with other institutions and local governments, as well as the environmental team of the Iraklion School of Arts, to promote the St. Anastasia gorge.

As far as the Karteros gorge, which starts from the Episkopi municipality and ends in Gouves, it has already been upgraded by the combined efforts of the Episkopi, Alikarnassos and Gouves Municipalities, and it is now open for all you nature lovers.

Mr. Zithianakis also informed us that efforts are being made now by the Gouves Demos, together with Cretaquarium, for the founding of the Environmental Education Centre.

Finally, it must be pointed out that additional environmental actions and programmes are being carried out in other schools in the Gouves Demos and supported by various institutions, and we will write about them all.

These environmental programs not only benefit our educational process but constitute a powerful motive for a qualitatively upgrade of tourism.
