TUNA FARM IN CRETE
OPPOSED BY WWF

A plan for a blue fin tuna fattening farm in Crete, the second of its kind in Greece, has upset officials at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), saying  it will add to the over fishing of the species in the Mediterranean and that this authorization shows an indifference of the country towards the protection of the species.

According to the original plans submitted to the government, the new farm will be located at the Messara Cove on the southern coast of the island.

Yiorgos Paximadis, who is in charge of tuna with WWF Greece, said that there is already a "surplus" of these farms in Greece.

The Greek government has already been upset with various environmental groups for not attending the conference of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) last November, which saw blue fin fishing quotas reduced, but not enough for the protection of the species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
