Environmental Programmes And Actions

In continuing on the actions of Environmental Teams in our Demos, I shall refer to a programme in operation at the Iraklion School of Arts, in cooperation with the Hellenic Institute of Marine Research and the Niceville High School in Florida, USA. The main points of the programme are:

Title: The study of Marine Bio-diversity of Crete regarding the National Geography in Shore Areas.

Purpose: So that the students at our school get acquainted with Marine Bio-diversity and its role in climate change.  The criteria for choosing this programme includes the proximity of the Art School to the Marine Research Centre, the importance of the subject and the knowledge gathering and cultural connection with Florida High School.

General Goals: The possibility of actions through research and interaction with the Florida High School students.

Particular goals on the subject: For students to work through internet and access relative information; gaining experience through actions; the compilation of data using knowledge and experience gained in the programme.

Methods: Becoming familiar with the subject thorough ΕΛΚΕΘΕ researchers; gathering of information through Internet and books; Greek-American interaction and study of material from Northern Crete.

The Aristia Network has funding available for all expenses for three students and a chaperone from each country participating at the Spring School Programme.

From the Iraklion Art School there will be participating three students and the programme’s coordinator.

Also, the Gouves High School environmental team, working together with the Museum of Natural History, will explore the inner villages in the Gouves Demos in its effort to showcase the biotope of the Aposelemi River in the gorge.

Also interesting is the effort of the Archdiocese of Crete which is trying to initiate environmental actions in the framework of the soon-to-be constructed camping grounds in Anopoli.
