HERSONISSOS NEWS

KIDS BEHAVIOUR DISCUSSED

The social policy office of the Hersonissos Township, in cooperation with the Kindergarten of Analipsi and its parents and guardians association, organized an informative meeting with the issue: “The aggressiveness in the kindergarten age.”

Guest speaker at the meeting, which was held in the Analipsi Kindergarten, was psychologist Mrs. Dafni Danai.

Parents and teachers jointly participated in the meeting, and had the chance to ask questions about the all-important issue.

SLUDGE PROCESSING IN HERSONISSOS

The Hersonissos Demos is a pioneer in activating a unit to process sludge from waste water using solar energy thus resolving one of the biggest problems in refuse management, according to a spokesperson.

This unit, which is the first of its kind in Greece, includes a greenhouse measuring 950 square metres, with a capability of processing 2,000 tons of sludge produced annually from the biological cleaning of liquid waste in the municipality.

The mixing and airing of the sludge is performed by a robotic vehicle programmed to perform all functions of the process.

The greenhouse is controlled and checked by a central PLC system which registers all parameters recorded by inner and outer censors, such as temperature, humidity, solar radiation and wind speed, thus regulating all elements of installation.

"This type of sludge processing solves many problems, like reducing its initial size to one third," the spokesperson said. "Also, as the temperature rises above 50°C, the silt is being cleansed and may be used as a soil improving agent."

REFUSE MANAGEMENT GETS UPDATED

Hersonissos Mayor Spyros Danellis, together with Malia Mayor Kosta Lagoudaki and the president of HYTA (the municipal enterprise for the environmental management of refuse) Yianni Mountraki, joined in introducing a new piece of equipment for chopping up bulky refuse.

"It is a relatively expensive machine, but one which is able to process bulky refuse such as mattresses, furniture, car tyres and all sorts of agro refuse, and afterwards promote the chopped refuse to recycling," the mayor explained.

Up until now, bulky refuse was dropped in unmanaged dumping sites, polluting the environment.

"The inclusion of this type of equipment by the municipality's Refuse Management Enterprise could mean no more unsightly and environment-polluting dumping grounds, while it adds one more link towards completing the circle of environmentally correct refuse management," Mayor Danellis said.
