A Salty Idea

Dear Editor:

I read with interest your tip on cleaning burnt on food from pans with fabric softener. My 92-year-old mother-in-law sprinkles a handful of salt into the still warm pan. This works just as well as fabric softener but at a fraction of the price. In these economic times surely that can't be bad.

Διαβάζω με ενδιαφέρον τις συμβουλές για το πώς να καθαρίσετε τα καμένα υπολείμματα φαγητού από τα κατσαρολικά με μαλακτικό ρούχων.

Η 92 ετών πεθερά μου ρίχνει μια γεμάτη χούφτα αλατιού μέσα στη ζεστή κατσαρόλα. Είναι το ίδιο αποτελεσματικό με το μαλακτικό αλλά στη μισή τιμή.

Σε αυτές τις περιόδους οικονομικής κρίσης, σίγουρα δεν είναι κακό.

Flying High

Dear Editor:

I'm writing this letter in reference to your article regarding model plane flying in your March issue. I have many points to make . . . but will suffice to talk about the article's last paragraph: "Even though there is no formal model plane flying club…"  Without meaning to offend the reliability and knowledge of the "flyers" mentioned in the article, I should point out that an association (not a club) exists for the last ten years. Although I happen to be the association's vice president, I am sending this letter as a reader of your paper. Now, for some basic information. The name of the association (not club) is Union of Aeromodelists in Iraklion Crete (E.A.I.K.). We are governed by the Hellenic Aeroathletic Federation and number roughly 100 members, but only about 30-40 are active. We organize from two to four events a year, local and district competitions and shows. 

The area where we fly is in Anopoli towards Profiti Ilia, just some kilometres away from the old base in Gournes. There, we have organized an area so that we can safely execute our flights for us and our visitors, and we thank the Gouves Demos for allocating that space.

Thank you for your informative letter. However, the line you refer to ("Even though there is no formal model plane flying club…") pertains only to those flying enthusiasts who practice their hobby on the old base. Now, we are happy to learn that there is, in fact, a formal "association" (not a club) in our area. We will be in touch with you to arrange for a reporter from The Khronicles to cover one of your flying events, shoot some exciting photographs and interview association members.

Αερομοντελισμός

Αγαπητέ Συντάκτη:

Αιτία του μηνύματος αυτού είναι το άρθρο Αερομοντελισμός στην παλιά βάση Γουρνών του Μαρτίου  για το οποίο έχω αρκετές επισημάνσεις και διορθώσεις … αλλά θα αρκεστώ να αναφερθώ στην φράση της τελευταίας παραγράφου του άρθρου «Αν και δεν υπάρχει επίσημη λέσχη αερομοντελισμού…».

Χωρίς να θέλω να μειώσω ή να θίξω την αξιοπιστία και τις γνώσεις των  αερομοντελιστών που αναφέρονται στο άρθρο σας, οφείλω να επισημάνω κάποια πράγματα για αποφυγή παρεξηγήσεων και λανθάνουσας ενημέρωσης προς τους αναγνώστες σας.

Σύλλογος (και όχι λέσχη) υπάρχει και υφίσταται τα τελευταία δέκα έτη. Αν και τυγχάνει να βρίσκομαι στην θέση του αντιπροέδρου, αυτό το μήνυμα το στέλνω με την ιδιότητα απλού αναγνώστη του εντύπου σας για να αποφύγουμε κάποιες χρονοβόρες διαδικασίες που θα απαιτούνταν αν θα έπρεπε να εκπροσωπήσω το συμβούλιο και όλα τα μέλη. Μερικές βασικές πληροφορίες. Το όνομα του συλλόγου (και όχι λέσχης) είναι Ε.Α.Η.Κ. Ένωση Αερομοντελιστών Ηρακλείου Κρήτης. Υπαγόμαστε στην ΕΛΑΟ (Ελληνική Αεραθλητική Ομοσπονδία). Αριθμούμε περίπου 100 μέλη αλλά τα 30-40 είναι ενεργά. Διοργανώνουμε 2-4 εκδηλώσεις το χρόνο, αγώνες τοπικούς ή περιφερειακούς, shows. Ο χώρος που …πετάμε είναι μόλις μερικά χιλιόμετρα από την πρώην βάση Γουρνών. Συγκεκριμένα στην Ανώπολη, στον δρόμο, πριν τα νταμάρια προς Προφήτη Ηλία.  Εκεί έχουμε διαμορφώσει ένα χώρο τον οποίο μας έχει παραχωρήσει ο Δήμος Γουβών που και ευχαριστούμε, ώστε να μπορούμε να κάνουμε τις πτήσεις μας με ασφάλεια για εμάς αλλά και τους επισκέπτες.

Σας ευχαριστώ για την ενημερωτική επιστολή σας. Εντούτοις, η γραμμή " Αν και δεν υπάρχει επίσημη λέσχη αερομοντελισμού …" αναφέρεται μόνο σε εκείνους που…πετούν στην παλαιά βάση.  Τώρα, είμαστε ευτυχείς να μάθουμε ότι υπάρχει, πραγματικά, ένας επίσημος σύλλογος (και όχι λέσχη) στην περιοχή μας. Θα επικοινωνήσουμε με σας και θα κανονίσουμε για έναν δημοσιογράφο από Τα Χρονικά να καλύψει ένα αγώνα με το κατάλληλο φωτογραφικό υλικό και συνεντεύξεις με μέλη της Ένωσης.

Γνωρίζω ότι δεν είναι άμεσα εφικτό, όμως ψάχνω ένα παλιό φίλο το “Λεωνίδα”, ο οποίος εργαζόταν στην αεροπορική βάση Γουρνών κάνοντας διαμόρφωση εξωτερικών χώρων από το 1986-1988, ενώ διέμενα εκεί. Αυτός και η γυναίκα του είχαν ένα παιδί το 1987. Με γνώριζε ως “ο Μπιλ από τη Βοστόνη”, “θα αφήσω τις πληροφορίες μου σε περίπτωση που σταθώ τυχερός: Μπιλ Μάρει, 40 Οδός Γούντρουφ, Γουόλπολ Μαςς. 02081.

The Name's Not The Same

Dear Editor:

I'm writing this e-mail to Sports Editor Tony Bowes. First, congratulations for the newspaper and second to correct a small mistake. I've been reading your newspaper and I saw that every time you write about Diagoras you write the name of a player wrong. There is a main Diagoras player by the name of Somarakis, but his first name isn't Marios, but Dimitris. Marios Somarakis is the son of Mr. Somarakis, leader of Diagoras, but Dimitris Somarakis is the player you write about. Could you please make the correction in your column? Thank you!

Το Όνομα δεν είναι το Ίδιο

Γράφω αυτό το e-mail προς τον Αθλητικό Συντάκτη Τόνι Μπάους, πρώτον για να σας συγχαρώ για την εφημερίδα σας και δεύτερον να διορθώσετε ένα μικρό λαθάκι. Διαβάζω την εφημερίδα σας και είδα ότι κάθε φορά που γράφετε για το Διαγόρα, γράφετε λάθος το όνομα ενός παίκτη. Υπάρχει ένας βασικός παίκτης του Διαγόρα  με το όνομα Σομαράκης, αλλά το μικρό του όνομα δεν είναι Μάριος, αλλά Δημήτρης. Ο Μάριος Σομαράκης είναι ο γιος του κ. Σομαράκη, αρχηγού του Διαγόρα, αλλά ο Δημήτρης Σομαράκης είναι ο παίκτης για τον οποίο γράφετε. Μπορείτε παρακαλώ να κάνετε διόρθωση στη στήλη σας; Ευχαριστώ πολύ!

Dear Editor:

Thank you so very much for the honour of entering and (amazingly) winning the English
side of the poem competition in your newspaper.  I have been an admirer of
The Khronicles for quite some time and I think the poem competition is a wonderful idea. 
Being an ex-teacher who knows the importance of anything that encourages reading and writing as a
life-long pursuit I greatly appreciate your efforts in this regard. 
You guys went all out and made the award ceremony a very special evening
that my husband, Yani, and I both enjoyed very much. 
The food, wine, poems, the beautiful plaques, and most of all the people...all so nice!
