Mrs. Markaki was a key
member in a team of 10 scientists from both countries who worked for seven
years to produce the two-tome 2,400-page lexicon, which includes 60,000
entries, 80,000 meanings, 102,000 exemplary phrases, 10,000 idioms, and
170,000 translations. Mrs. Markaki, who is the
sister of Yiannis Markakis, manager of the Lychnostatis Museum in
Hersonissos, stressed that "the relative bilingual dictionaries that have
circulated up until now did not cover all the needs of the translational,
research and teaching needs of the Dutch and Flemish speaking community in
Greece, which is particularly blooming in Crete, and also the Greek-speaking
community in Holland and Belgium." Also Mrs. Markaki
reported that "the dictionary is particularly functional and concerns both
the normal user of the two languages as well as the professional
(translator, interpreter, educator) because it includes an abundance of
words, phrases and uses of the modern Greek and Dutch languages."
She explained that the work also contains information of a grammatical
nature with regard to morphology and syntax as well as the more important
acronyms of the Modern Greek and Dutch languages.
"I wish," Mrs. Markaki stressed,
"that this dictionary simultaneously gives the spark for the aid and
facilitation of Hellenic Dutch relations as well as underlining the
importance for nuclei of Hellenism existing abroad."
The
work was financed mostly by Dutch institutions, with lesser contributions
