That Darned Vegetable Plot

Well, I knew it was going to happen . . .  I just didn’t think that it would be so soon. I guess I just do not have the time to do my little vegetable plot justice.

I told you what I had sown in my garden last month, and I passed on the advice of organic grower Minas Petrakis on what we could all sow/plant in April. Guess what? I haven’t had a chance to do any of it. Sure, I have kept the weeds under control but, my peas desperately need support and the areas earmarked for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are still rather bare. Still, there is always this month.

With that in mind, I paid another visit to Minas, and his recommendations on what we can be putting into the ground during May are tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, aubergines, peppers, zucchini, onions, sweet corn, melons, ochre, carrots, celery and many of the herbs. He stated that this is the month when most things can be planted, but warned that watering can become an issue. For example, it is possible to sow spinach but it needs a great deal of water. Also, lettuce can be grown but look out for varieties that have been especially developed for the summer and, even then, plant them where they will receive some shade. And, of course, give them a lot of water. If fruit is your thing, Minas was proud to show me his recently planted row of strawberries.

The Red Palm Weevil – Another Update

The ever-active Mr. Andriopoulos is continuing his legal battle to get the government to take responsibility for this problem. The latest is that the Agro-development Ministry have passed Mr. Andriopoulos’ legal action back to the District of Western Greece Forestry Division, with the admonition: "if it's within their responsibilities to investigate!"

One of our news hounds did track down Iraklion M.P. Manolis Stratakis who provided us with his recent question to the Agro Development Minister. Ιn essence, Mr Stratakis is asking what the government, and it’s relevant departments, intend to do about the problem. Mr. Stratakis points out that the palm tree owners strongly protest the fact that the State is not taking the necessary measures, resulting in enormous cultural, economic and other tourist damages in the infested areas.

Mr. Stratakis concludes by asking the Agro-development Minister: "what measures will be taken for an immediate application of the Community Directive?"

Perhaps more individuals should follow Mr. Andriopoulos’ lead and take out private law suits?
