Jean Hanlon

Dear Editor:

I am writing this letter in regards to April's edition of The Khronicles. I think the coverage on our Gouves resident, Jean Hanlon, was appalling. Not only was it just a few lines, but it also wasn't published in Greek. A Greek person may have information but may have not been able to read the story in English. To us Gouves residents this is front page news rather than the price of petrol. Not only is it news of a Gouves resident but it also strikes up awareness for people to see how times here are changing and to be careful.

All of us, not only Gouves residents, are saddened by an untimely death of a local citizen. We're sure Ms. Hanlon had many friends in the community, and that's why we made mention of her passing. By the tone of your letter, you seem to be particularly grieved, and for that you have our sincerest sympathies.

Dear Editor:

As a frequent visitor to the area and regular reader of the Khronicles, I was deeply upset to read your article in the April 2009 edition about the untimely death of Jean Hanlon. Both my wife and I had met Jean on several occasions and had found her to be both a bubbly and vivacious character, who seemed to be liked by all who met her. I know that jean had worked in several different establishments in the Gouves area, and a testament to her character can be found on several of their websites from holidaymakers who had nothing but praise for her. For your readers' information, Jean's funeral was held in Dumfries, Scotland, on April 17, and was attended by upwards of 250 people, surely further testament as to how highly thought of and liked Jean was.
After the funeral, I received a text message from Jean's parents, Pearl and Eddie, part of which I have reproduced for your readership . . . "please thank Jean's many friends in Gouves for the support given to her sons, Robert, David and Michael . . ." So, on behalf of the family, a big thank you to all that helped.

Ως συχνός επισκέπτης στην περιοχή και τακτικός αναγνώστης Των Χρονικών, αναστατώθηκα πολύ να διαβάσω το άρθρο σας τον Απρίλιο του 2009, για τον πρόωρο θάνατο της Τζίν Χάνλον. Η γυναίκα μου κι εγώ, είχαμε συναντήσει τη Τζίν σε διάφορες περιπτώσεις και τη βρήκαμε χειμαρρώδη και κεφάτο χαρακτήρα, που άρεσε σε όλους που τη γνώριζαν. Γνωρίζω ότι η Τζίν είχε εργαστεί σε αρκετές επιχειρήσεις στην περιοχή των Γουβών, και μια μνεία στο χαρακτήρα της μπορεί να βρεθεί σε κάποιες από τις ιστοσελίδες από αυτούς που έκαναν διακοπές και είχαν μόνο τις καλύτερες αναμνήσεις. Προς πληροφόρηση των αναγνωστών σας, η κηδεία της Τζίν έγινε στη Dumfries, της Σκωτίας, στις 17 Απριλίου, και συνοδεύτηκε από πάνω από 250 άτομα, σίγουρα αναφορά για το πόσο σκεπτόμενη και αρεστή ήταν η Τζίν.

Μετά την κηδεία, έλαβα ένα γραπτό μήνυμα από τους γονείς της Τζίν, την Πέρλ και τον Έντυ, μέρος του οποίου έχω αναπαραγάγει για το αναγνωστικό σας κοινό…"Παρακαλούμε ευχαρίστησε τους πολλούς φίλους της Τζίν στις Γούβες, για την υποστήριξη που δόθηκε στους γιους της, Ρόμπερτ, Ντέιβιντ και Μαικλ…", Έτσι εκ μέρους της οικογένειας, ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ σε όλους που βοήθησαν.

Dear Editor:

I'm wondering if you can offer some advice on how to locate a Greek friend from many years ago. I was in the USAF stationed with AFRTS at Iraklion Air Station and Nikos Markakis was one of our civilian employees. I'm told when the base closed he started a hotel east of the base. Αναρωτιέμαι αν μπορείτε να βοηθήσετε να εντοπίσω ένα Έλληνα φίλο από πολύ παλιά. Ήμουν εργαζόμενος στην Αμερικανική Πολεμική Αεροπορία με τις Αμερικανικές Δυνάμεις, Υπηρεσία Ραδιοφωνίας & Τηλεόρασης, στις Γούρνες και ο Νίκος Μαρκάκης ήταν ένας από τους πολιτικούς υπαλλήλους μας. Μου είπαν όταν έκλεισε η βάση ότι άνοιξε ξενοδοχείο ανατολικά της βάσης.

Town Hall Wedding

Boat Sale

Dear Editor:

I feel obliged to write a quick thank you to The Khronicles for the superb support while selling my boat through your classified section. Chris Bowes and her sales team designed the advert free of charge, and I had many phone calls during the first month, and then in the second month came more calls, one of which was a sale to a lovely Dutch couple from Sissi. Many, many thanks and keep up the great work you do for all of us that cannot read Greek.
