IT'S A NEW BEGINNING FOR
HISTORICAL MUSEUM

As the entire program of exhibits is being completed, new exhibits are delivered progressively. First to open is the new permanent exhibit on the Battle of Crete, the German Occupation and the Resistance.

This exhibit supports the dramatic character of the facts it deals with, while, simultaneously, is friendly to the visitor, with an abundance of electronic supporting elements.

It is comprised of four units.  The first refers to the beginning of WWII and Italy's attack against Greece in October of 1940.  This unit ends with the German invasion and the occupation of continental Greece.

The second unit focuses in Crete, with the air bombardments of urban centers, the invasion by select German troops and the first action of retaliation from the intruders against the population.

The third unit records the dark period of the Occupation up to the Liberation.

The visitor can hear the narrations of people who participated in the dramatic events of this period, like the well known British officer Patrick Leigh Fermor and French saboteur Jack Sibard, while photographic material from personal files of German soldiers who served on Crete are also displayed.

The last unit impresses on the traces that the merciless conflict left behind on the Cretan soil.

The two big military cemeteries, that of the Allies in Souda and the German in Maleme, are the main points, as they constitute living memory areas where each year people from all countries involved honour their dead.

The entire exhibits program will have been completed by June, when the official grand opening will also take place as the museum enters a new era.
