Romanos 2 v N Ergoteli 0

N. Ergotelis started the game strongly with three shots on goal in the opening ten minutes, but all were well saved by the Romanos goalkeeper, Kristos Kioupakis. Another shot from Ergoteli scraped the crossbar with the keeper beaten. Slowly, Romanos started to gain the upper hand in the mid field and the ball was kicked off the goal line when Ergoteli's goalkeeper, Xatzidakis, was beaten. This was followed by two great saves from Xatzidakis in the space of minutes, keeping Ergoteli in the game. In the 35th minute a terrific shot from Emmanuel Lasithiotakis brought an even better save from Xatzidakis. It was now end to end football with both sides going close to scoring and, in the closing minutes of the first half, Thramoundanis hit the Ergoteli cross bar. From the start of the second half, Thramoundanis made a good run and an equally good cross but there was no one on hand to tap the ball in. A free kick by Ergoteli was tipped over the bar by Kioupakis who then made a good save from the resulting corner. After 50 minutes, Lefteris Andrethakis beat the off side trap and scored to make it 1 – 0 to Romanos. Ergotelis tried to get back into the game, but Romanos were strong in defense. In the 80th minute, Romanos won a corner from which Kolaretakis headed in the second goal. Romanos defense held off any Ergoteli attacks in the final ten minutes.

The Khronicles "Man of the Match" was Lefteris Andrethakis for an excellent goal and he was always a threat to the Ergoteli defense.

Boxing:

Greek-Australian lightweight, Michael Katsidis provided a good fight to stop former world champion, Jesus Chavas in Texas. The hard hitting 28-year-old was well ahead on points when Chavas, 38, threw in the towel after round seven. The win has earned Katsidis, who is ranked number 2, a chance to fight Mexico's W.B.O. Lightweight World Champion Juan Manuel Marquez. However he may want to fight Britain's Amir Khan because of the lucrative paycheck he would receive.

Football:

O.F.I. After 33 years in the Greek Super League, OFI are relegated to the B Ethniki League. Knowing that they had to win their last two games, they could only draw 0-0 with neighbours, Ergotelis. Now they will have a fight to keep their good players at the club and also win back the fans for next season.

Greece v Israel:

FIFA have announced they have begun an enquiry on the targeting of Israel players with laser pens by the Greek fans especially on the Israeli goalkeeper, Dudu Aouate, during the second half penalty kick taken by Giorgos Samaras, which gave Greece the 2-1 win. Later, it became known that a Greek priest was arrested for an alleged use of a laser pen during the game. Now, Greece may be faced with playing a home game behind closed doors, or even a points deduction. The Hellenic Football federation (EPO) is also likely to have to pay a fine and receive a strong warning about the behaviour of the national team's fans at the Pankriti stadium

European Gymnastics:

Greek champion Vlassis Maras won the gold medal in the high bar section at the European Gymnastic Championships in Milan, Italy. Maras made history as he became the only athlete to win four gold medals in the horizontal bar.  Lefteris Kosmidis won the bronze medal in the floor exercise.

Tennis:

Professional tennis is taking off in Greece. The Greek Tennis federation has not yet caught on to the rise in popularity of tennis, but luckily private investors are trying to make Greece one of the tennis hotspots of the Mediterranean. Three high profile tournaments have been organized, one of which has already been held to a sell out audience.

The second tournament is The Aegean Tennis Cup Challenge Tour being held from April 27 to May 3 in Rhodes. This may be the biggest professional men's tournament in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The third event is the Vogue Athens Open, is a women's tournament, and is proposed to be held at the end of September. Cretan Lena Daniilidou has expressed a wish to participate.

Local Darts Tournament:

About 20 people of different nationalities took part on April 5 in a darts tournament at the Ideal Apartments bar in Kokkini Hani. The tournament was organized by Wim Peters and Yiorgos Vasiolakis, President and Vice President of the Double Tops Dart Club Crete. The results after a many hard fought matches were 1. André Weber, (Germany) 2. Leo Xatzakis, (Crete) 3. Marianne Vogels, (Holland), 4. Nick Smith, (England)

Golf:

The Aegean Spring Championship 2009 held at Glyfada saw Evangelos Ginis win the men's A category with Theodoros Toumazanis second. In the women's event Violeta Siozou won the top honour and Stephania Toka came second.
