THE KHRONICLES TURNS THREE

Like any healthy three-year-old, The Khronicles literally jumps into its fourth year bursting with energy and an eagerness to continue its unparalleled growth.

When the newspaper first hit the streets and the internet in May, 2006, it was a four-page black and white English-language publication with a circulation of 300, limited to the Gouves Township.

Now, with the publication of this month’s issue, The Khronicles, now 36 pages, boasts of a print readership surpassing 6,000 published in colour and in both English and Greek, and circulated in Malia, Hersonissos and N. Alikarnassos, as well as Gouves.

Equally impressive, its on-line edition is now up to almost 20,000 "pageloads" per month.

Publisher Sofia Klidi says the popularity of the newspaper is due to its unique format. "We provide the local residents and visitors with a solid combination of hard community news stories together with informative feature articles and columns." she says.  "And we're the only publication to offer a bilingual format. However, the real key to our success is our dedicated and talented staff of reporters and columnists, without which none of this would be possible."

Mrs. Klidi added that the newspaper's popularity is evident in its advertising pages, as well.

"In these days of the "shop-around-consumer," the knowledgeable advertiser is more conscious of where to spend his limited marketing budget," she says. "They understand that if they want to reach this particular market, there is no better way of doing so than in the pages of The Khronicles."

Congratulations on its third anniversary has come from many political and community leaders, who recognize the fact that no other Greek or Cretan newspaper can reach the local community as thoroughly as The Khronicles.

"In its three years of circulation The Khronicles/Τα Χρονικά, the bilingual local newspaper, has become a part of our daily routine and a soap box to express our problems as citizens of the local community," says Renia Drosou, Head of Planning, Growth and Social Policy for the Municipality of Nea Alikarnassos.

"It also provides a unique opportunity to get information on useful issues and also on the services of local institutions and enterprises. This newspaper with its varied content and worthy collaborators was sorely needed in the local communities. I wish The Khronicles a thousand-year life and to continue to regenerate and enrich itself in its present rhythms."

Gouves Mayor Yiorgos Nikolakakis says: "From the time I've known the paper two and a half years ago it has continuously improved and has truly become a local news medium which tries to cover all important local issues.

"I wish the paper longevity and to continue in the same vein, as I very much like The Khronicles' interactive side, because, not only does it report a story, but it provides the opinions of residents and other people active in the community and local economy as well."

On the occasion of the newspaper's third anniversary, Mrs. Klidi took the opportunity to announce an expansion of its staff, including the appointment of Maria Aretaki as display ad sales manager, and the addition of a teenage reporter to write a monthly youth column.
