Local Football:

Romanos 0 v PAO Gouves 1

In this local derby between Romanos from Elia and PAO Gouves, both teams had a cautious first ten minutes. The first chance on goal fell to Gouves' Evangelos Belithakis, but the shot went well over the bar. A free kick to Gouves was saved by Xristo Kioupakis and, from another free kick, Gouves' Dimitris Nerandzakis was just unable to make contact with the ball. A corner for Romanos was punched out by Steryios Mahairas and John Spanakis followed up with a shot, but was wide of the goal. Gouves had a free kick and Kioupakis missed the ball which ended in the back of the net, but it was off-side. Romanos' Nikos Eleftherakis hit a great shot on the turn which went into the side netting, and this was followed by a long range shot from Manolis Kolaretakis which went wide. A good move from Romanos ended with Eleftherakis shooting straight at the goalkeeper, then a great chance for Gouves from a free kick fell to Belithakis, but with a free header, the shot went straight at the goalkeeper. In the second half, the first attack was from Gouves, but the resulting shot was well over the bar. A free kick to Romanos ended with Eleftherakis bringing a great save from the Gouves goalkeeper. From a Gouves free kick, the ball was hit off the Romanos goal line.  A good run by Dimitris Nerandzakis followed by a nice shot was kicked off the Gouves goal line, but the ball fell to Evangelos Belithakis who made no mistake and scored the only goal of the match. Slowly, Romanos were trying to get back into the game with Dimitri Andreadakis shooting straight at the goal keeper. In the dying minutes, a free kick to Romanos from just outside the penalty area was well blocked by the Gouves defence, which held on until the final whistle.

The Khronicles "Man of the Match" was Manolis Kolaretakis for his constant efforts in trying to get Romanos back into the match.

PAO Gouves 1 v Thiagoras 1

Another fiercely competitive local derby, and almost straight from the start Thiagoras had a free kick which was taken by Kostas Thelistathis and put in the net by Pavlos Moraitakis. A free kick for Gouves taken by Yiorgos Kyriakakis went just wide of goal and a good move by Thiagoras ended with Moraitakis shooting just wide. There was good connection between Karagounis and Moraitakis, which caused a lot of problems for the Gouves defence.  Angelos Yiakoumakis made a nice run, but had Gouves' Stelios Paliouthakis hanging onto his shirt and was lucky not to be booked. A quick throw in by Gouves' Evangelos Belithakis to Vasilios Yalanakis, who then hit a great goal to level the score at 1-1. Another free kick to Gouves, but was headed out by Thelistathis, was followed by yet another free kick to Gouves, which led to

Thelistathis being sent off. Belithakis made a good run, but, instead of passing the ball, he shot at the goal but it went wide. At the start of the second half, there was a strong appeal for a penalty by Gouves but it was denied by the referee. Gouves' Dimitris Nerandzakis made an excellent run but was brought down just on the edge of the penalty area, and from the free kick Belithakis' shot was well over the bar. From a 50-50 ball, Gouves' Ernis Kiatos ended with facial injuries and was taken to hospital. (We wish him well). Gouves had a succession of corners resulting in Belithakis making a great shot, but the goalkeeper made an even better save. A second bookable offence for Kyriakakis saw him sent off. Thiagoras' Yiorgos Thelistathis was sent off leaving them with nine men, but for the rest of the match it was Thiagoras who looked the more dangerous.

The Khronicles "Man of the Match" was Steryios Mahairas for his good goalkeeping throughout the match and the excellent save in the last minute to keep Gouves in the game.

Basketball:

Panathinaikos are champions of Europe for a fifth time after beating C.S.K.A. Moscow 73-71 in the final of the Euroleague in Berlin's O2 World Arena. After the first half Panathinaikos had a massive 20 point lead over the favourites but they let the Russians back into the game winning by just two points.

Swimming:

Greek swimmer Angeliki Exarchou broke her own national record in the 200 metres breaststroke to qualify for the world championships in Rome in July. She clocked two minutes 27.39 seconds beating her previous record by over two seconds. Also, Maria-Georgia Michelaki is the new holder of the Greek 100 metres breast stroke in the under 17 and under 20 women's categories. Maria, who will be 16 in July, will now be allowed to take part in the World Championships.
